electric fan

OK I replaced the rad with a 3 core and it is better but not good enough, it still gets over 200o while pulling my 5er up hills. My question is can I put an electric fan in front of the rad? Has anyone done this? I would put a switch on it so I could turn it on as needed. Thanks for any info.

The question is, HOW MUCH over 200 degrees? Is it 5 degrees over 200 or 35 degrees over? I use redundant or dual water temp and oil pressure gauges on any tow rig I build so I can be sure of accurate temp readings.

Many thermostats are built to not even open until 195 degrees so that range is no problem. The ethylene glycol or other coolant raises the boiling point of the water from 212 to maybe 225-235 depending on mix and product chosen. As long as it remains liquid the coolant is still removing heat from the engine. I would be concerned if the coolant temp is actually getting too high so knowing the actual temps it hits is crucial to whatever next step is necessary. How hot is it getting?

Well the weather has cooled somewhat( nw arkansas ) The temp raised to 220o on a short trip (25 miles ) I do have two engine temp gages One manual and one electric. No tranny gauge yet.

When you hit 220* could you hear the fan start to Roar.......or was there no noticeable differance?

If you could'nt hear the fan ingaged and start to draw air,.........i would replace the fan clutch first! Then add the extra fan if nessasary!

Man i shore wish your new 3 core radiator would have dun the trick.......
was you able to bolt up your old fan shroud?

Flash:

I wish the new rad had ,to but im not sure that it hasen't but haven't had a chance to give it a real test. Yes the fan is working and it may not go beyond 220o. However I do have enought room for an electric fan. I ought to be able to pick one up at the bone yard.

read a post somewhere about adding 9inch reversible 12v fan on trans cooler and it helped bring temp down when towing. how heavy is your fiver? 3.07 gears and an auto makes for some heat going up hills. so far there is not an electric fan that can put out enough cfm for a ctd. there are some that can help if you can get em to fit.

(ANTIFREEZE),,, Has some chems in it to help prevent boiling, but your true friend is PRESSURE!
For every 1 lb of pressure the boiling point raises 3 degrees,
So a rad that is holding 10 lbs effectively raises the boiling point from 212* to 242*,,, If you cooling system has a faulty rad cap or any leaks, you will start to get air bobbles in the coolant, and then the water pupm will begin to captivate,, or send foamy water through the system, and it will be unable to cool the engine properly,,,
You can also buy water wetter, that helps the coolant give up the BTUs better,,, antifreeze actually hinders the release of heat compared with straight water.
Replace that cap weather new of not, or have it tested!

It could be that your transmission and torque converter are adding the excess heat to your cooling system. Try a better trans cooler first and then see how your temps are while towing. A better torque converter would help as well.

Thanks alot for all the info, I have two tranny coolers in front of the rad . The clutch fan is good( comes in at about 195o ) and helps some. I have a 14/16 lb rad cap new, The next thing will be to put a huges t/c in and have the tranny gone thru. New thrmostate 180o but it doesen't open untill it reaches 195o. New water pump and new hoses thruout.

Yes i agree! you, unfortunately, have the wheres combo for heat!

non inter cooled(small radiator) auto Tanny(lots of heat transfered to the eng from the Tanny)

have you installed a Tanny temp guage? this my be were you need some extra cooling

I've looked at putting an electric fan on mine but its got to be less than 3" thick and I haven't seen one less than 4" thick. How heavy is your 5er? My GN is about 6K empty and i guess about 10-12K loaded and when it comes to long hills I am in 2nd gear to keep it below 230* on a hot day and that is with an extra trans.cooler.
