That fact that it's a cummins or a diesel has nothing to do with it. I have had it happen over half dozen times on diesel engines. The first time for me was on a nearly new 180HP tractor. It had less than 500 hrs on it and the tractor would start and run for about 5-10 seconds then load the engine and die. The a/c clutch was out and once it ran long enough it would kill the engine.

I have had them seize on a gasser as well, thinking back on the one you had, was it a V belt or a serpentine belt?

I have never had one with a real serpentine belt system continue to run, for whatever reason they really seem to bite in.

318 with a V belt. and had it on a slant six. both just squealed till the belt broke before I could get off the road. must be the serpentine belt making the difference.

Well, I really wish I would have taken the serpentine belt off to test it.. Turns out it was the fan bearing… must of been dragging on the engine for quite a while then completely seized….

Ya I don't think a v-belt would stop any engine, they simply do not have enough surface area and grip to bring an engine to a stop. That's another reason I hate v-belts on any engine they just doesn't last or function like a serpentine belt setup does.

It is not like you could have driven it far with no serpentine belt / water pump.
You where looking at a tow anyway, unless you carry a spare fan hub with you.
Glad it was a simple and fairly cheap fix.

My A/C compressor was locked but all it did was make the belt smoke. Maybe my tensioner isn't up to snuff.

Well that is good news on the simple repair...sucks that you didn't diagnose it yourself though...next time....

I had a bearing in a year old alternator crap out in my '77 Ford truck causing the rotor to hit the stator. Sounded like I had multiple rods knocking. I was freaking out thinking I trashed the engine (400M) and my buddy Mark sussed out the alternator by listening to various components through a long screw driver. Like a poor man's stethoscope.

On the plus side a simple fix is generally preferable!

As Ollie said, you were looking at a tow anyway, and you have to admit, when they told you it would be a couple of hundred versus 5 K it made your day........

Glad it all worked out!
