I have a change to get a 1995 Dana 70 from a 2500 automatic cummins Dodge Ram without differential.

It has everything but the differential itself.

So my question is.

Can I change the shafts, bearings and drums to my 1990 W-250 5 spd? Are they bolt on?

I really hate my inboard drums!!

 

Yeah outboard drums would be nice for sure.

If the spindles and the tube lengths are the same, it should all work.

 

Unfortunately, I don't have any of my rear Dana diffs apart right now to compare.

 

The carriers, etc., are the same, but as far as I know, the the axle shafts are not, and the mount for the backing plates is definitely in a different location. I'm pretty sure it is easier to swap the axle housings than put the later hubs on the earlier housing . . . but I have a Dana 80 to swap, so I never looked hard at the other options.

 

What you want to change are the hubs, drums and maybe backing plates. Not sure on your srw 70. But I was looking at swapping d80 drw hubs/drums/backing plates onto my d70 drw. It looks do-able.

It is a hell of a task to cut and weld everything again on it's place to retrofit a newer dana 70. Leaf spring packs are different width and in different place and so are the shock mounts too.

But if nothing helps I'm willing to do that. But then I need a detroit locker and 4.10 gear set+ bearings to that newer Dana 70. Also I'd like to have the disk conversion then too...

Sounds like a long, hard way to get slide off drums. The newer 70 is wider, plus 9/16" studs.... but only 32-spline, so there's more cost again to get it to 35. You might be further ahead to do an aftermarket disc brake swap.

My solution was a Dana 80 complete with 2nd-gen leafs. Huge upgrade on so many levels.

 

Shipping is the killer for me... We do not have Dana axles lying around in here... and I have no interested of getting my W-250 ride any better. The suspension is horrible and that's it. I like it. For nice ride I have my 1995 Impala SS.

What I have been reading now, I'll go for the Disk brake conversion.

I need to have the parking brake since it is required in here and it is very handy. That's why I have been passing the K20 front caliper option.

But what I have read in that topic I need to ask it again in here.

I need the brackets, K20 FRONT rotors but what year cadillac eldorado rear brake calipers?

It seems about ten years ago the dealer started selling outboard drums and hubs as replacement of obsolete inboards.

 

That link to a 10 year-old thread on TDR is a mite confusing. Tell me what is involved in converting my SRW D70 to outboard brakes? Around 2008 I had a Dodge dealer replace my rear brakes, including drums, and they never mentioned my inboard drums being obsolete? But the next time I need rear brakes I would certainly pay extra to convert to outboard .

 

Ok, I'm still interested to know what does it involve to swap a newer 2nd gen dana 70 drums to the older one if it is possible... I still could do that for the half of the price of the disk conversion...

 

Why don't you take some measurements and compare? The bearings in the hubs are the same. Take a look at the bolt pattern where the backing plate bolts on. Take measurements from that flange to axle flange.....to wms. Etc. I have already done this comparison on my drw80 vs drw70. I don't have a 1stgen srw70 to compare but I've got a srw80...

 

Found that link googling for info of converting from inboard to outboard. Didn't find much. But thought that was interesting and posted it up. Hard to believe nobody has done it. Bearings are the same srw to srw. As are drw to drw. As noted I have compared my drw70 to drw80 and it seems to check out. Have not done it yet though.
