Today was service day. 13 liters of oil , and new fuel and oil filters. Air cleaner I do once a year. Went to grease the drive line and I got one pump out of my grease gun and it ran out of grease, isn't that how it usually goes.....

 

Well I've never been happy with my LineX box liner I had sprayed in a couple years ago. The tailgate started pealing within the year. And I don't know what I was thinking when I had the box sprayed with that stuff....I firmly believe in not putting any type of coating that is "water tight". Simply because water ALWAYS gets beneath it and will cause issues down the road.

So the other day I'm shooting the $hit with my friend, and neighbour, and notice a small nick in the liner and it appeared to be lifting. So I picked at it and this is what happened in about 10 seconds....



Then today I got back from making a run for bathroom reno supplies and notice other areas lifting. So started to work on the liner seriously this time.

This is what about 3 minutes got me....

 

So figured what the heck, lets peal the rest off. I've wanted the coating off for a while now, but assumed it was going to be a big hassle...turned out the crappy adhesion made is very easy to remove.

So took my neighbour an I less then 10 minutes to completely strip the box....







Sure glad I got that out of there. There was major water infiltration under the liner at the head of the box. Rust starting in most areas near the "edge".

Never again will I have any type of coating like this used anywhere on my vehicles.

 

Looks like they didn't prep it properly maybe?

My dad has had his in the bed and bed rails for 7 years now. Still looks good besides the top of the tailgate where it has been rammed by bad forklift drivers..

However it could be a different company that sprayed it, I don't remember.


What are you going to do inside of the bed now?

 

Clearly the prep sucked! I went to them and asked about my tailgate...they said they could "glue" it back down...WHAT??? I asked for a refund on the price of the tailgate...that is not part of the 5 year warranty!

Regardless...an expensive lesson learned I guess. The box will get good old fashioned Tremclad/Rustoleum applied with a brush. I have never had an issue using that stuff....

 

I'll have to do that to my bed eventually too then. The previous owner put some roll on bedliner in mine and it's quite flaky now.

 

I'd say your local Line-X guy is a moron or at least employs some. That doesn't even look like they used a Scotch Brite pad! The bed should have been prepped with a DA sander at a minimum. I'm a firm believer in Line-X, but that franchise owner is shady to say the least.

 

Wow that Line-x prep job looked like they only blew it off with an air nozzle, if that.

The bed is nice looking under there though.

 

Our fleet of farm trucks all have bedliner in them. We have beat the tar out of them and I have never seen that before. I think the difference is prep work and the fact that our beds were Always brand new when we had it sprayed in them. You should be able to see sanding marks under that liner. Even if it was from a scotch brite you would see it. When they done one of ours I watched and they masked the whole truck and then went after the bed with 80 grit on a DA. Sorry for the bad liner that sucks!!

 

Lucky you caught it before the rust demon did . Mine was undercoated and linexed, went and got a load of gravel and thought a rock had hit the wheel well. it wasnt a dent it was lack of metal inbetween the two layers.

 

That looks like something that would happen to me.Money for nothing.

 

You really need to send all the pictures to there head office that should not have happened that is down right crap prep work!!!

That's amazing. There was NO PREP work at all done on that bed. My truck took almost 4 hours of sanding, and you could see the surface was forever changed once he was done. I slept in the office while he worked, as I couldn't get a ride back home.

Mine was sprayed on a few years ago, and so far...... well, lets not say.

I bet you get a very interesting response from Linex CORP. They don't like stuff like that happening, and especially getting out.

 

When I had my FIRST Dodge in '94 bed sprayed down with Rhino Linings, they where like "you may not want to watch this" as they took the wire wheel to my BRAND new paint job in the bed.
The truck only had about 600 miles on it.
They gave me their shop truck and direction to the local Hooters for a long lunch.

I never had any peeling problems even after I cut some of it loading snow machines in the bed.

I bet Line-X will not like the picture of your neighbor peeling off a 3x6 ft chunk in one sheet!
