Cowl crack fixes: How many have done this?

Hey all... I was reading up on the sticky and was wondering how many folks have done this? I have an annoying rattle that sounds like it is comeing from the firewall/ cowl... It sounds like a metal sheet is loose and is rattling against the firewall or something... Anyone else heard this/ seen this? Interested to see if it is going to be a big fix.. Thanks... Jake

I have a crack in the driver’s side cowl and I looked into pulling off the fender and patching it myself. BUT I was talking to the body shop that does all of my work and he said he would pull the front bumper, hood, fender panel and fender, wire weld the crack and reinforce the area then reassemble everything.

He said it will take about a half day and would cost me $200.00…

I would take a chance on scratching my paint and have to take time to realign all of the sheet metal and that is not worth the money to me, besides that is only 2 tanks of fuel.

But this is just me.

But after you get the truck down to where you can get to the crack is would be easy to fix.
Last I checked, Dodge said they only stock one side patch but I don’t remember which side.
Just be sure to stop the crack before you patch it.

Any ideas on why the cowl cracks in that spot?
Are the cab isolators sagging and something we should check?

Thanks Jim... I have no idea of the situation.... There is a problem though as it does seem to be a stress type situation...

So do you have the same type "sound" coming from your truck as well? My rig sounds like it has a piece of medal vibrating against the hood/firewall/cowl... Is that what you are experiencing as well??? Thanks... Jake

mine has a crack on the driver's side. the only time it makes any noise is pulling into a driveway on an angle with the wheels turned. makes a real loud groan followed by a popping noise (almost sounds identical to bad front control arm bushings). i'll get around to fixing it (and beefing up the pass side) eventually.

Both sides are cracked and the passenger side leaks in a hard rain. One of these days when I get it going fast enough I will try to have them fixed.

The cowl cracking was an issue when these trucks were still in production. It's not a sign that anything else is wrong.

I'm neither great photographer or body man, but I put several pictures in my gallery when I did my cowl cracks.

Maybe somone can learn from my mistakes.

Rattle here... but sounds as if it may be something loose in the door or possibly the lower edge of the driver front fender...

The crack seems to be the culprit for a chirping creaking sound kinda what like a meal cricket would make. I also get a squeaking noise from my sun visor when it gets vibrating because of the LOUSY Southern California freeways.
I am obsessed with little sounds that pop up in my truck, I can be driving down the road and I am checking out every little sound trying to find where it is coming from so I can fix it. The ones under the dash are especially hard to find especially when you are trying to watch where you are going and looking under the dash at the same time.
Another source for rattles ate the window glass when the felt gaskets wear out, I need to replace one on the passenger’s door.

well i have the same problem, when im going slow i can really here it, but it is primarly when i hit a bump. but read somewhere one culprit might be letting the door sling open and that would create the stress
