Hookaayyyy. So i went out to change the fuel filter today in an effort to fix my fueling issues. and i start really looking over the injection pump and i start finding problems lol. 3 of the 4 bolts that hold the pump in place were all lose. i took them completely off with my fingers. and one was completely gone....

So im going to take a wild guess and say my pump timing is off hahaha.

Then i figure this would be a good time to finally install my gov spring, and bump the timing. then i realized the 4 bolts that hold the top of the injection pump on, are nearly stripped out. so that put a cramp on the gov spring install.

So decided im just going to pull the entire pump off, clean it up, do a little maintenance on it, install my spring and some new bolts, put it back on, bump the timing, and then we'll see if my lift pump is dead or not.

I've got the pump ready to pull, but left it in the truck for the night. I'll pull it out tomorrow when i can see my self drop the keyway into the front case haha. hope for the best tomorrow..

well this is where were stuck at for the moment. Finally got the 4 allen heads off. just need to run to napa an get new ones now. Installed my 366 spring. But now im a little worried.

i thought i heard i should be able to spin the pump freely but every quarter turn it would get pressure until you bumped it over the tension spot. nothing on mine spins. some one school the nooby please! what should i check for to make sure its in working order before i put it back in the truck!

Did you lock it when you removed it? That would keep it from spinning...Mark

C D, I don't think you can turn the pump by hand. If your luck is anything like mine (sounds like it is) after you put the pump back on something else will go wrong (the main pump seal went out in mine after messing with it.) Although its always easier to remove it the second or third time but if your finances allow you to spend a few hundred. It might not be a bad idea to get it professionally checked out since it has so many miles on it and your in doubt.

I can see that the spacer to hold the lock out bolt is still in place...so his pump is not locked. It should be very difficult to spin the pump over. I usually have to use a pipe wrench to get mine to move. So I doubt if there is anything wrong.

I would pump a seal it in it since you have it out...best $25 you'll spend. Especially if you don't have to pull the pump out a 2nd or 3rd time.

When you go to install the pump you will have to line up the key ways.

Dude, I just read the whole thread from start to finish... You do incredible work on that camo stuff.
Those dash gauges refinished quite nicely. That truck is a classic... you should be proud...
One day at a time and it'll be all new on the inside.
Love those LED lights you tacked together. And a 5 gauge pod! Holy Crapola... that truck needs a magazine article to fill up. Contact one of those diesel truckin mags and submit this thread. They should jump at the chance to post this story.
Nice job, can't wait to continue the story...

First and foremost, thank you everyone for the help and advice.
Im in a hurry to get my truck on the road by tonight to hopefully make a camping trip i promised to the kiddos, so i'll have to cut corners on the seals and just not be ****** off when i have to pulll the pump a second time lol.

the pump is not locked, but sounds like im good to go, so i'll just slap it back in the truck and hope it fires.

Cdenny, thanks for the words, post like that are why i keep threads so detailed. Hopefullly after its painted and a little more prettied up dieselpower or someone will pick it up. but probably a year off from all that.

well bad news. now that everything is put back together. the truck still wont fire. I can not get fuel to bleed at the fuel filter bleeder.

So i ordered some new stuff for the truck.

HVLP lift pump
5x12 Injectors
Wix Fuel filter w/o water sensor
banjo adapter bolt so i can finally hook up my Fuel Pressure Gauge.

hopefully it all gets here in a timely manner, and i can get my truck back on the road asap. really hope my truck of never ending problems, is finally getting to the end of its problems.... this is getting old.

The old diaphragm pumps for our trucks just plain old suck. My ppump lift pump was a real doozy to get fuel to the system after I rebuilt the motor... I'd hate to see how hard it would be with a diaphragm pump lol

Hmm, the truck will run without the lift pump. My lift pump wasn't bringing up any fuel when I took the main line off to the VE. I remember crank that truck over and over and over till the battery would almost die and it would finally start. Going to work was a blast.. give it to much fuel and it will sputter and shake bad. It still got me to work until I ordered a new one from cummins.

I just replaced the VE pump on my truck and killed the battery about 5 times trying to get it to run. Had good fuel at the bleeder as well as the injectors, but the pump was only building about 3.5 lbs of pressure. Went to Napa and bought a new LP for about $55 and it started first try.

Good luck trying to prime the system with just the IP. If you don't sieze the thing from lack of fuel... Get fuel to the IP inlet and have the injector lines cracked before cranking it over, you'll be better off.
