In all the frustration and problems going on with the truck, when my injection pump rattled lose it lost one of the bolts that hold it to the front case. when i put my injection pump back on, i didnt replace that bolt yet, and then i went on and forgot about it all together.

im thinking thats going to be a good place to start.

and it was leaking oil before it went in the shop, just not quite this badly. i dont think its anything i can blame on source other than its something they probably should have seen and said something.

either way just found out yesturday an old friend opened up a new diesel shop in my home town on the 1st. So trucks in his care, i know he'll take care of me and promised it would be right when it left his shop. he was also able to get it in friday night, plans on working on it all weekend, and promised it finished by monday night, so i only have to worry about finding a ride to work 1 day. Thats something source wouldnt be able to do for me, so even if it was their fault, i wouldnt take it back to them. I'd just send them the bill lol.

tappet cover, lift pump, oil pressure sensor, injection pump and power steering pump/vac pump are on that side. All of which can leak copious amounts of oil if they come loose.

my lift pump broke off of the block last monday. oil everywhere. so I know the feeling.

I was thinking the oil feed line for the vacuum pump. This is a pressurized line that runs out of the block up behind the vacuum pump. If it's loose it will blow oil every where. Oil pressure sender could have got hit and cracked. And as others have stated the lift pump.

I'm with Mark on this one too...I don't like to have anyone else work on my stuff. I prefer to be the only one to blame.

Gaskets between injection pump and cover and vacuum pump and cover and timing pin assembly can leak a seemingly large amount of oil, too.

But I doubt enough to drain 3 gallons of oil in 90 miles.

If the shop did it it would more than likely be something attached to the head. I forgot about that line in the back, maybe they left it undone. What does it feed?

I'm the only one that wrenches mine too - so far. Partly for the stated reasons but also because I'm the only mechanic I can afford too...

ditto. I can count the number of times I've taken my vehicles to a mechanic on one hand since I owned my first vehicle at 18. 2 of those times have been in the last couple months. Got a shop to rebuild my rear diff back in july and this week got a shop to do my balljoints because I don't have a press and dont have the time to do it. I regret the latter. I could have rented a press and done the job and saved myself $600

Also, the timing pin, if it fell out, can leak a surprising amount of oil.

thanks for all the replies guys. I cant agree more on wanting to work on the truck my self, and up until this point, the only thing i havent done my self was my first transmission rebuild.

the second one i originally rebuilt my self but ended up selling it and grabbing the ATS trans since i came into a killer deal on that. and then paid a shop 200 bucks to put it in. it was well worth it to me to let someone else bust their nuckles for 200 bucks than my self lol. specially with work taking up so much time.

this last issue was just a great excuse to get my head o-ringed which is something obviously 99% of us cant do our selves. and again with work killing me on hours right now, and me needing my truck as fast as possible. it was just as easy to let them pull the head, and o ring it. but since it was off, might as well get the valve springs and everything else done, and since it was at their shop broke down, might as well let them fix it too. least i would know it was all done right and i should have a trouble free truck for a very long time as far as that part went.

this oil leak is turning out to be something entirely different. part of it my fault, part of it just years of age fault.
i called on the truck today. they've got it all tracked down and promised it would be done by tomorrow night for me to pick up after work. its leaking in a couple different spots, but its just old seals and a missing bolt it sounds like. Nothing source did, but something source should have noticed, especially since they test drove it.

i cant speak highly enough about this shop its at right now. They waited after hours on a friday for me to get my truck there. they immediately started checking it out right then, and talking with me about it, and figuring out a game plan.

i explained i just sunk 3grand into the truck, and couldnt afford another grand. He promised a bill at 500 bucks or less, and he would gladly put me on a payment plan if needed. and he also promised to help accomodate me with my work schedule since i just started a new job, and this broke down truck couldnt have came at a worse time.

they are busting all day today on a sunday, and they will be there way after hours on monday night to let me pick it up after i get off work. If for some reason they dont have it finished by monday night, he promised me a loaner car on the house to be able to get to and from work untill the trucks finished.

they are going above and beyound IMO to make the truck right and pick up the slack source fell short on. If they keep good on everything we shook hands on, I'll gladly let them do more work on my truck i just dont feel like doing my self.

This truck must have a curse on it. A MAJOR one. i want to sell it SOOOOO bad. but i figure im pretty close to about $13,000 tied up into now. and if i sold it, i'd probably be lucky to get 5K. So i guess i'll just keep pluggin away the thousands. it HAS to end someday... sad part is my twin turbos and paint just keep getting pushed off longer and longer.

Problems: massive massive oil leak. somewhere under the front cover. I just had the front main done when i got the truck... So we'll see what that ends up being.

Bad power steering box leak.

Transmission pan leak

fuel leak at the pump

starting to think my transfer case isnt even the correct one for these trucks, and maybe be causing my transmission failures. it keeps slipping between gears and causing hell on my transmission temperatures and driveability

wiring is getting worse

downpipe broke and wont bolt to the turbo any more

hood wont latch any more (besides the safety latch)

So truck is back in the shop AGAIN!

And im sure i'll have another couple thousand dollar bill by the time its all over. I wish i had the time to work on it my self and save some cash. but i go to work at dark, and get home at dark 6 days a week. i just flat out dont have the energy nor the time to touch the **** thing.

Soon as its home though, im rippin the transmission out, selling it for whatever i can get out of it, driving my rally car daily for work, and buying a **** 6 speed transmission.

Anyways, picture from today, and probably the last one you'll see for a few months!

all these thousands of dollars should be going into a 10" lift kit, crossover steering, redhead box, 18" expensive wheels, 40" tires, paint, new trim, badges, HID's, air horn, twin turbos, new exhaust, more interior work, etc....

but NOPE! instead the next thousand+ bucks goes into replacing the front case cover, because it some how cracked and is my source of puking oil... and the next goes into a new transfer case...

should have the truck back by wednesday, but not sure how driveable its going to be with my t-case issues. So it'll probably continue being an extremely expensive shop ornament...

got a couple little goodies for it though when it does get home.

Did the KDP crack the case?

Sorry bout all your bad luck. Sounds like the POs lack of preventative maintenance is catching up with you.

im not sure i didnt ask. he just said they found a crack and said it needed replaced. i said do it. and it better not leak a drop of oil when i get it back. So hoping for the best. all i have left to replace is a transfer case and the entire truck is brand new. litterally.

If you weren't crazy far away I'd say come over to my place and if you pull the tcase yourself you can have it. Nothing wrong with it, it's just sittin in the truck and the truck is sittin because it has not motor and a blown transmission.

In the long run, you'll be better off doing all that needs to be done now. You should have plenty of trouble free miles ahead of you. I know I do because I've basically replaced everything in my ford. But we went over that already. haha
