Cold engine miss.

I wanted to see how my truck did with colder temps and the block heater so I plugged it in last night and today I went out to see how it started in 20 deg OAT.

I turned the key on and I noticed that the Wait to Start light didn't come on. I cranked it over and it started right up. It had a severe miss though and when I revved it up Lots of white smoke came out the tailpipe. This went on for at least 5 minutes. I backed out and started down the street and it wasn't throwing white smoke anymore but had a normal amount of black smoke.

Do I have a dirty/sticking injector? Do injectors stick open and allow to much fuel and cause a miss?

Thanks

Edwin

The block heater works. That's why the WTS light didn't come on.

I don't know why it would run lumpy and white smoke, when mine's plugged in it starts and runs like it's 70 degrees outside. The only thing I can think of is a KSB problem.

How bad does it run in the cold if you don't plug it in?

Sounds like a bad injector. The spray tip is partially plugged. Pull your injectors and pop test them and repair as necessary.

Here in northern KS it was 7 degrees this morning. Pugged in for 1hr and started no probs. Mine does have fairly new injectors. Doesn't even smoke white that much. I don't know what exactly couses some trucks to have such a time with cold weather.

Next couple of mornings are forecasted to be at 0 or slightly negative temps. Hope my fuel aditive does its job.

I put a double dose of fuel treatment in and did a 60 mile run of accellerating up hills and coasting down which seemed to help when it was missing a while back. I probably need to pull the injectors and clean. How does one go about doing a POP Test? Is this something I could take the injectors out and have them serviced somewhere? (where?)

I live in southeast, KS. I figure it's a warm weather job since I ain't got a garage so if it doesn't get any worse It'll wait till spring. I don't need to pull anything or go anywhere in it. I just like to drive it every few days to keep the battery charged. I always go several miles until it's completely warmed up. (usually for coffee at Sonic.)

Is this a good practice? I have no experience with letting one sit for long spells. How often should I drive it?

Thanks

Edwin

Look in the yellow pages for a diesel injection supply house or shop. Call them and get a quote from several places. Then shop the sources from here to get your best deal. You may want to consider replacing the set if they have a lot of miles on them.

Make sure you have your fuel conditioned for cold weather. If you are in a location where it isn't sold pre conditioned, and it gets cold, you get what you're describing. Your fuel treatment helped so that might have been it.

Burning cold untreated diesel is like trying to burn jello basically.

Good luck with it.
