clicking noise under truck, when in gear an during acceleration
While accelerating im hearing a clinking noise under the truck from the rear window-seems like in the driveshaft area. I also have a pretty good vibration when pulling out. Does this sound like the carrier bearing?
When my carrier bearing went it made a really loud howling sound. I actually thought it was one of my pinion bearings until i saw the rubber around the carrier bearing all ripped. Im pretty sure you can check your carrier bearing by the amountof play it has when u push up or something im sure someone can key u in on that as im not sure as what is ok play and bad play.
Well sounds like it could be a bad unversal joint. My truck broke a cuck out of one of the caps and it made a clicking noise and shaking when going forward. Check this closely its hard to see and the unjoint may appear to look an feel fine. As for the cairer may be just check her closely when they go bad the sound horable. Not to worrie the torque gods have given you a gift lucky you.
The last carrier that went on me made a loud howling noise. It just started since i have been working the truck everyday.
I started a small company(just me) doing metal demolition, hauling, etc and the first week has cost me some money RF maker/turn lamp hung under bumper-gone(dont know how), RR Taillight housing, busted(my finger got that one too ), LR license plate light-smashed, LR trailer marker light housing- busted off, Trailer license plate light---Gone
U-joint. My truck eats one about every 6 months 'cause my driveshaft is tweeked. I know the sound well. I keep a spare behind the seat with an old 2 pound hammer and an impact socket to drive the caps in and out. My record with this truck is 20 minutes from shutting the truck off to taking back off with the new joint installed
Well, I havent been on in a while, but While on the interstate it got pretty bad, and then i started hearing a howling noise and some banging. Slide under her at the Tractor Supply, grabbed a hold of the driveshaft and moved away. Pretty much all of the rubber from the carrier is gone. So i picked one up and will install today, along with either front u-joint if needed. I just did the rear u-joint with my pinion seal.
Hey man. Did you ever find the issue with this? I'm having exact same problem, truck gets to about 28-30 psi then absolutely falls on it's face. 0 boost until i let off or let the boost drop.

What do you mean by "0 boost until I let off OR let the boost drop"???

How much lower than 0 boost can / does it drop??
Maybe it's a gasser with vacuum in the intake manifold...I suggest he hold his breath waiting for an answer from the original posters in this 15 year old thread......Ben
I posted this to the wrong thread but lets see if you've heard about this or have any ideas.
I get on the pedal, truck starts to accelerate/pull, boost is building up, rpm's are climbing, and the all of a sudden when the truck gets to 28 psi the boost just drops off completely to 0psi even though I havent let off. This happens quick, immediately after the truck loses all boost, i'm still full throttle and it'll just puke black smoke until i let off the pedal because the turbo already checked out for that acceleration. Then I can get back on it, build boost back up to 28 psi and the exact same thing happens. Does that make more sense? Thanks for replying.

Without a sig or other details about what year your truck is we would have no idea where your problem would lie. I don't think even a waste-gate being stuck open would give you zero boost. With is belching black smoke doesn't seem to be a fuel problem since more fuel usually means more boost. Is your boost gauge mechanical or electronic? Is your truck a later model with a computer that's screwing things up?

What year Dodge truck?
28 PSI is more than a stock truck will build normally. What have you done to it?
Does the turbo have excessive play on the turbine?
Edwin yeah you’re right a lot of missing details. I just updated my sig. Turbo has some wiggle to it but. It terrible. Not going in and out but I figured out the issue.
the truck is an 06 and you’re not wrong about that. This ECM like you have a say in n how the truck will perform. Not much of an along for the ride ECM, it will help protect the engine however annoying it can sometimes be.
Root cause:
after reading up on other people having This same issue and realizing the air filter was either too dirty or malfunctioning somehow then the problem would go away I decided well what else am I going to do anyways. Checked the air filter and sure enough it was all clobbered up. It’s a stock filter and air box. The filter was basically getting sucked into the intake ram tube, crumbling the filter.
then I pulled it. Test drove without the filter and I was making almost 50 psi lol.
long story short. Need a new air filter, will likely upgrade and problem solved.
side note recommendations on an upgraded air filter?

You should get a K&N filter. It flows better and will last forever. You'll pay more for it to begin with but then every 50,000 miles you buy a kit that has cleaner and new oil to refresh the filter.
If you're hitting 50 psi of boost I wonder if you have o-ringed heads. That's a lot of boost.
Glad you figured it out. I'm glad it wasn't something expensive like the ECM-computer. It why us 1st genner's drive these old trucks. They're easier to fix without having a degree in computer science.
