carpet/sound insulation D250- general sound proofing
Ok,
I'm looking for a dramatic improvement in sound level to talk at highway speeds. I did the carpet padding in the doors which helps alot. Now I want to pull up the carpet as I'm sure dodge has no insulation.
Not a fan of the dynamat or asphalt materials, but would love a sound level improvement.
I was going to see if I couldn't get a piece of carpet padding into the instrument panel, replace the hood pad with something thicker and put down something under the carpet.
What to use- don't want to rot out the floor board. But want a noticeable reduction in noise- double layer padding.. maybe just home carpet pading with. Maybe a combination with a strips of dynamat.
Something above the headliner too??

I have dyna mat in my trucks. It works really well. And even though it is costly , I think even small strips throughout the cab would Help to eliminate a lot of vibrations thereby eliminating noise

Check out the website below for a decent explanation of how to go about it for the best results. It is a departure from the old way of just layering dmat or the like. Make sure and click on the pictures across the top if I remember correctly they go into detail of each type of product (the use, the reason etc). I am not implying that you need to use his stuff as I have not so I do not know if his products are good but the method is sound (no pun intended) and upon more research you will probably find the same.

I pulled my bucket seats, pieled up my carpet, under the seats and in the front cab there was padding and thick stuff! so I put this product down on the floor and on the back walls and side walls(there was no padding in these areas) of the extra cab area, then later put in the doors with spray addhesive...WOW! what a differance it made, you can talk and hear blasting down the hiways no problem.Well worth the effort and cost.

Here is what I have so far:
Second Skin Audio Spectrum at $59.00 a gallon.
I used 2 gallons, one in the back 2/3rds and the other in the front, a little heavier.
To get an idea of what I had, a buddy and I took it out on the highway at 55 and got a reading of 95-99db between the front seats, after the coating, and 60 days to cure it (not their recommendation, just took us that long to do it) we got a reduction to 78-80db in the same location. So, it does something, now I am looking to bring it down further.
It seems that most of my noise is from the hole cut for the 4x4 shifter, is there a rubber boot that fits? The hole that is cut there is way over sized, is there any reason that I can not cut a piece of steel with a slot just wider than the select lever width and fit it in?
Moving on from that question I have since cut a steel plate, undercoated it and fit it under the shifter. That cut down quite a bit of the noise, I then cut Home Depot carpet padding to fill the inside of the shifter boot. Haven't got a db drop yet since I don't have the meter, but I can say that this has been the largest drop in sound yet. I can actually talk to some one with out yelling.
