Can I run my tophat pin without te spring?

I lost the spring that goes on my top hat pin in my VE pump and someone said I might be able to run it without one...is this true? If not does anyone have one or know where to get one? I need my truck back on the road asap!

I am not sure, but i would think that it would not be a good idea. Have you tried a local pump shop or semi truck dealership?

I did the same thing a while back when i had my pump apart, i forgot to put my finger behind it and it sprung out and i never could find it, even after cleanin my shop. I went to a pump shop and they said they were discontinued now and you couldn't buy the parts anymore. I got one from a guy on cumminsforum I think, he had the whole assembly layin around and shipped it to me for $20. If you could find a junk VE pump and take one from it, that might be your best bet.

Your definitely better off finding a replacement. I forgot to put mine in and had to set my idle to 1200 rpm just to keep the truck running when I put it into gear. Good ole DTR helped me figure out the fact that I forgot to put it in and by than the spring was long gone. Luckily my local pump shop had one laying around

I've seen VW VE pumps on e-bay for cheap. I almost bought one for $35 but passed. Figured they would have a few spare parts I could use.

I would think if that spring was not there then there would be a good chance the Gov spring could works it way loose and pop out.

Maybe you could find a small spring at the local hardware store that might work. I don't think it has any bearing on the function of the pump other then to hold the Gov spring tight and in place. So if the replacement spring is a little stronger then the original I don't think it would cause you any problems...but this is just my uneducated opinion, and I could be wrong.

That is the idle spring, the pump will hunt at idle if you don't put it back.

A Bosch pump shop can get you one, part number can be found in the diagram in the sticky.

Yeah, I don't buy the discontinued story. Sounds like a lazy parts guy to me. The VE is still widely used in the ag industry. My neighbor has an 80 horse new holland, year or two old, with a 4 cylinder Perkins and a VE. No way that parts aren't available, imo.

I thought the same thing. Maybe its just the place i went to. I probably shouldn't mention the name, but it is a very well known injection place. I didn't like the service they had and maybe it was just the guy but he told me that the part was discontinued. Then he said i was stupid for tearin my pump apart and said it wouldn't run now and would have to be recalibrated. I told him i have had apart before and it runs fine and I know what I'm doin. He just said I must of been a lucky one. I was disgusted and don't really like the place anymore.

Well, you can understand his skepticism when you come in looking for a part you don't know the name, function, or part number of.

But his customer service sucked. Sounds like one of those places where their attitude is "We could get a lot more done around here if it wasn't for all these darn customers."

Ya I just had an experience with a guy like that yesterday. I had called friday and gave a guy the number and he said they had it in stock so when i went over yesterday to pick it up the a different guy said they didn't have any in stock and that they were discontinued, so I waited for the gentleman that helped me on friday to come back from lunch(1 1/2 hrs.!!) and he remembered me calling and had my part in 5 sec...... so what the hell was wrong with the other fella? Lazy? retarded? Both?

I told him it was what they called the top hat assembly in the VE pump and explained it to him. Then he brought up the picture of the VE pump blown up and i showed him what one it was and got the number and he still actin like i was stupid. I was very disappointed with them and don't like their business anymore.
