i just unscrewed mine all of the way out.... keep track of how many turns in it was. then i popped it off while i had it out. put it back in to where you think stock is, or maybe even further out just to be safe.
Take a 6mm wrench on the full fuel screw- the collar will turn/ jump back when you turn in the screw.
For the AFC thing, it IS drivable without the hose or connection. It will just be doggy and lack power. No problem driving without it other than that. I drove one for several weeks w/o an AFC hose (the pump HAD been tuned, and had 80hp sticks), and did no damage.
Unix- I disagree with you on the necessary gauges- pyrometer and fuel pressure are near mandatory. Boost is nice to see and cool to watch when getting on it, but optional, IMO. Kinda like a tach in a manual truck. Fuel pressure gauge will let you see if your lift pump is up to the task, along with tracking fuel filter flow- you can go longer betwen changes because you wont be changing the filter blindly. Conversely, if you get a bad batch of fuel, you'll have some indication of filter plugging. My $10 ebay boost gauge (with snubber) has paid for itself in filter savings alone. I went 15K on the last one, a record on MO fuel for me.

Lost one of the two washers some years back, I haven't had a washer between the bajo fitting and the pump top in some years. I don't believe it leaks much and the truck performs as well as it ever has ^^ Though I do plan to go to the plastic tube solution when I get time just for ease of use.
