If you have one side off to use as a sample, take a suitable piece of pipe and make a socket that will fit.
Once you get the business end to work, weld a bar across the other end, with a big nut welded to it's center for turning with a socket.
The son's 90-model has the 2-9/16 hex-nuts with the folding-tab lock-washers, a much superior system, in my opinion.

This socket fits 90-93 front Dana 60's with the Warn style lockouts. There are two nuts in there, in a jamb nut configuration, meaning they are almost identical outside and inside nuts with a washer that has a lock pin on it to keep them from turning when together. The lock washer in the middle has flats which you peen over to lock it to the innermost nut. These nuts require part #4165 CTA or maybe the OTC 7158(we'll see soon?)... sockets to remove. In most cases the nuts can be driven off with a punch of some sort, but mine were very tight together, no choice but the proper socket. The older 60's('89 and older) with the Selectro lockouts take the large rounded nut (2-9/16") I believe?? May have that mixed up as it has been a few years since workin on one of those.

I thought about making the socket-- easy enough to do with heavy wall pipe and square stock keyway type material. It would've taken longer to find the pipe at a metal shop, then fabricate, etc, and prolly cost more too. $20 is cheap, and it's heavy duty. Just wish I coulda got one off for a sample, I wouldn't be writing this. I am doing this for the good of this community based on my trial and tribulation.

Try this, these are all I had to try to finally find that #4165 is the proper one even though it is not the one that says it fits a dodge. Good luck, put this in the sticky!!!!.

thanks a lot for the info, i too have made many trips to the parts store. Now that have the one side off i have something to sample it to. My grandfather says he has the right one so we will see tomorrow.

I wish they would put this info in the sticky. I wrestled for a week to get the right socket, umpteen trips at $4/ gal had me fried. The proper spindle nut socket is CTA tools#4165. The socket for a dana44 will NOT work, as the one pictured above will not either. The Tool is a round socket, double thickness where it fits over the nut with 4 pieces of square stock protrudig into it at 12 3 6 and 9 o'clock. The Lisle tool combo socket is real close but after $35 and modifying it, it did not work. That was part #27400---No good. I tried others and returned also. PITA. Socket description must clearly state it fits 4500# dodge front axle. The CTA model works perfect, was only $20. and is avail at Bumper to Bumper stores.
