Average time to rebuild / reseal inj pump

Wondering approximate time to disassemble, clean & replace the seals in the VE pump, since they all seem to leak at one point or another.

Average person with general mechanical background, not daily mechanic, taking their time & care to clean & reassemble with new seals.

Just mentally preparing myself.

Well I redid mine twice...first one I goofed on re-assembly and it broke during initial cranking. You'll find a small thrust washer between the cam plate and piston head....mine popped out of the seat and got bound up. Then on cranking it shattered and cracked my piston head. So use a dab of grease to hold it in the bore during assembly. Just a FYI.

But once I actually pulled it apart and resealed it myself properly, it took me a couple days. But only working on it for a few hours each day, and lots of running back and forth to the Sticky to confirm things.

I think the use of fuel conditioner or outboard 2 stroke oil (this is what I use) will extend the intervals greatly to the point You might not have it th day it needs another re-seal.

The new seal kits are made to endure the low sulfur conditioning of the modern fuel. Unlike the original seals in the IP. But the low sulfur, and other additives that have been knocked back in the last couple decades, will cause your mechanical injection system to wear prematurely. Since the fuel is where it gets it lubrication.

I too run the 2 cycle oil, and a bit of Howes as well.

I use lucas fuel treatment / conditioner, which supposedly neutralizes poor fuel conditions. I never thought to use a 2 cycle oil in my fuel. Make the truck smoke ?

There is a thread about several brands of fuel treatments and snake oil used to 'lubricate' ultra low sulfur diesel fuel, I think BK started that thread. Anyways, it shows with real #'s how much this lubes actually improve the fuel, it is a surprise that some even lower the lubricity on the fuel or do nothing at all; among those is lucas fuel treatment. I used lucas for a long time but after reading the results from that study I didn't think I wanted to spend the extra $ anymore, now I use the 2stroke oil year round and power service white bottle during winter time.

I came across that thread one evening while cruising through the archives. That too is why I run the 2 cycle oil.
