Camshaft Sensor issues fresh rebuild and INJ
Camshaft Sensor issues fresh rebuild and INJ
Have an 07 5.9L 6sp manual with 210k.. Just had a rebuilt long block installed w/ new injectors because of bad blow-by.
However, it started throwing Camshaft Sensor error after the install. The mechanic who did the install gave up chasing the issue after a while,
To make a Long story short, the engine supplier had the truck shipped to them. They couldn't find any issues with their engine, cleaned the connections and it went off. They tested it for a couple weeks, told me it came on once and then went back off.
Eventually got my truck back and its only got about 3k miles since the rebuild and now my wife tells me the sensor is back on for a couple days now, resulting in hard starts but still runs good. (I am out of town)
Looking through the archives I stumbled upon the writeup below.
Is there a possibility that my ECM needs to be re-flashed due to a new block/injectors or is it more likely one of the shops messed up some wiring? I plan to check the wiring behind the AC as soon as I get home.
Any chance that the circut shares the same as the Blinkers/Tail lights since that is why she originally called me - they stopped working.
Other ideas???? as I am beyond frustrated.
From the Dodge Diagnostic Manual
Symptom:
P0341-CAMSHAFT POSITION (CMP) SENSOR SIGNAL
When Monitored and Set Condition:
P0341-CAMSHAFT POSITION (CMP) SENSOR SIGNAL
When Monitored: While the engine is running.
Set Condition: The ECM no longer detects a signal from the Engine Position Sensor.
POSSIBLE CAUSES:
INJECTOR DTC’S PRESENT
OTHER DTC’S
CAMSHAFT SENSOR
(K53) SIGNAL CIRCUIT OPEN
(K72E) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT OPEN
(K55) RETURN CIRCUIT OPEN
(K53) SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND
(K53) SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO (K72E) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT
(K53) SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO (K55) RETURN CIRCUIT
(K53) SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORT TO VOLTAGE
ECM
INTERMITTENT CONDITION
Turn the ignition off.
Disconnect the cam sensor harness connector.
Check connectors - Clean/repair as necessary.
Measure the resistance between the (K72E) 5-volt supply circuit and the (K53) signal circuit of the sensor.
Is the resistance between 900 and 1100 ohms?
No ! Replace the camshaft sensor
Most of the diagnostic processes check voltages on the wiring harness and sensor.

I believe your truck is like mine, the cam and crank sensors are the same. The usual cheap check is to swap the crank sensor and the cam sensor and see if the problem follows the suspect sensor. If it moves, change the sensor. If not, look elsewhere.
Sounds like they didn't press the cam gear all the way on the cam. Do you hear a knocking sound every now and then? The cam should be pressed on and protrude out of the gear some. If gear is flush with the cam, this is the problem. You have to position the press to allow the gear to bottom out all the way on the nose of the cam. Ask me how I know. I made that mistake on my first cam install. Won't happen again.

I hate to say it but I think Spooler is correct, I had a Cummins reman setting the same code. Turns out camshaft was worn out. Cummins had truck for 3 months said everything was just fine. After owner brought them the camshaft I removed from engine their jaw dropped. The lobes were worn and end play was excessive. They covered it under warranty.
Noop, it will be intermittent like mine was. I did another cam swap and found the issue. Ran fine. The air gap between the cam sensor is opening up due to the cam not being held in place by the thrust bearing that is between the cam and cam gear. With the cam gear not on all the way you have excessive clearance.

To my experience,,, you allways exhange the camshaft position censor as possible. Dont buy the cheapest ill reacon. That is the diesel trucks on 2000-2002. I think.
Exhance can be done by proffecional, or scilled mechanical person,, like me
