auto to 5spd swap whats needed?
My dad just bought a 1993 W350 dually with a auto. He wants to swap in a NV4500 like I just did. But without the obvious (Advance Adapters kit, NV450O) what else has to change to make this swap? I know I need a set of pedals, clutch slave kit, and to make it look right maybe the covers around the steering column from a 5spd truck. Tocover up where the shifter was. I need to know if the under dash harness needs to be swapped from a manual truck and does he need a manual ECU to make it work? Thanks for all the helpful info ad removed Thanks, Robert
The wiring harness will be fine, you just need to ground the neutral safety wire so the starter can crank. You will probably need to extend the wires for the backup light switch (part of the NSS on an auto).
The PCM will set codes but it won't affect the operation of the truck.

from auto to NV4500, have you addressed the NP205 spline count issue? Also, you might need to make sure your crossmember will support the NV4500 tailhousing where it's supposed to - i had to get a part to make it work.
when you get your pedals, check the shape of the little stud where the master cylinder rod fits:the bushing there is plastic and once it's gone the rod eats into the metal, I guess there's some pressure there every time gears are shifted.

Thanks guys!
Wannadiesel, where do I do that on these newer trucks? I did it when I went from an auto to a manual on my 74 pickup. But it was right at the starter relay on the driverside fenderwheel. If he finds a clutch slave kit from a donor rig, isnt the clutch switch on the pedal? Are all harnesses the same? Will it have a empty wire there now since he doesnt have the switch there for it to plug into?
Billet, so he also needs to find a NP205 from a 1989-93 Getrag truck? The auto NP205 is different?
Thanks guys, the info is great! Robert

The auto NP205 has a different spline count than a 5 speed one.
Have fun finding a 5spd NP205 out of a 1st gen cummins, everyone and their grandpop is looking for one of them.

Darn! Crossy I read what you wrote the other day in the Radio post. Have you personally ever seen the factory CD option? I just finished off my nv4500 swap today! All I need to do is buy a wire connector for the new reverse switch and splice it into my harness. I cant believe how nice the tranny is! I gave up on trying to find a nice (charcole) cc, auto carpet to swap out. I ended up using the little piece of carpet I cut out when I cut it out towards the console and filling in the original hole. It doesnt look bad at all!
The 29-spline NP205 is hard to find, no doubt: got quoted $600. + 50 core charge for one 5 months ago.
The other way is to modify the existing "auto-NP205". Get the right input shaft (29 spline for 5speed, 23 for auto): 29 spline.Get a machine shop to bore the housing where the bigger shaft goes. Some supplies (gaskets, seals, etc.) and you're at more than half the quoted used NP205...
the input shaft and parts should be easy to find: I got mine from a vendor in Roberts, MT who has done many dodge auto to manual swaps (PM for number , if needed).
Good luck, keep posted!

Thanks Billet, I am vacation this week. I took it off to get my nv4500 into my dually. Thats why my dad even wants it now. I let him take it for a drive once I got it installed. We are going to a big truck salvage yard tomorrow. Thats why I was asking what was needed. To try and look for them tomorrow. I personally would have passed on the truck he just bought, the only good part is there isnt any rust at all! It has west coast mirrors, auto, 215 tires, and for some reason the running lights are on a seperate switch from the headlight switch. So tomorrow we are definitly looking for a nice headlight switch (with connecting plug from harness) and what ever else we can find! Thanks guys, Robert
I agree Crossy, it looks wierd. Not that bad, just wierd. My dad didnt even notice until I pointed it out.
Billut, do you know if everything else is the same at the t-case? Will the crossmember be the same, and so forth?
Thanks for all the help guys, Robert

at the t-case, only the 29 spline input shaft and the required machining is what you need. I would get new seals, gaskets, and even roller bearings: they're easy to change, just time consuming.
the crossmember stays in place but you need to have a piece to make up for the misalignment of mounting holes (you can fab one, or get one from Quad4x4 on the net)
your driveshafts will need to be shortened (for the rear), and lengthened for the front.
There are enough parts to swap on an auto to NV that it is worth buying a wrecked 2nd gen. I know you did a Getrag to NV: there are more parts and issues to resolve from auto to NV. If you piecemeal the conversion, it gets pricey in a hurry.

The harness in the truck has a jumper where the clutch safety plugs in.
