5th gear weirdness

shifting my getrag out of 5th gear is a real unnatural motion. I have to 'pull' it out of gear in a clockwise half circle motion (if not done correctly it will jam in 5th even though the shifter is in the nuetral position). I'm no mechanic and know nothing of transmissions. Is this normal for a getrag or are the shift patterns just worn out?

yeah sounds like the shift tower (the top part of the transmission that has the shift rails and holds the shift forks) is worn.

The most expensive part would be the labor to remove the transmission to actually remove the shift tower cover. Or you could cut the floor board out and make it removable then you'll be able to remove the cover without removing the transmission.

Also "reman" covers can be purchased for I believe somewhere about 3-4 hundred. Do a search on here and someone found a place that rebuilds them.

mine does the exact same thing if you dont shift in a square pattern or cheat it into 4th it gets stuck and wont go back into 5th so you have to jam it back in. i hate it but ya your shifting tower is worn out it not that bad to fix just need to find the parts.
