4th Gear Grinding (Getrag)

Hi yall,

Some of you may remember the recent trouble I had with my clutch. It turned out that I had sprung a fluid leak and drained the system dry... Well, fixing the leak, refilling and bleeding the system has gotten everything working smoothly again... EXCEPT that 4th gear wants to grind every time i up-shift now

The only thing i have found that makes it NOT grind is to pause in Neutral until the engine winds down before pulling back to 4th gear. This is obviously very annoying when trying to accelerate, but I don't want to make it worse by shoving it down thru the grinding either... Is this a pull-the-getrag-and-take-it apart thing? Please say no!

Sounds like the 4th gear synchro is toast.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of.... How long you think i can baby it before i gotta shell out for a rebuild? And, is driving it that way (long-shifting to 4th to avoid grinding) going to cause other problems, do you think?

I can't see where pausing between gears or even double clutching would cause any more damage other than what might be caused by the synchro material in the fluid. If it were me, I'd change the tranny fluid and keep going until it was convenient to rebuild the tranny or until it died or just drive it as is knowing that a rebuild is coming.

Mine is doing the same thing. It has been for about 2 years. Had it in the shop this week n the mechanic said it should last a while longer with a little TLC. He said just don't make it go in gear until everything catches up n let it go in easy. He said 1,2,5,and 6 almost never go out so we t just replacing 3rd & 4th. Cost is gonna be around $1900 but that includes the rear main seal.

Won't hurt anything if you don't keep grinding at it. Run it until you can't stand it any more.

Thanks guys... But bad news i'm afraid...

I've been getting along just fine with the 4th gear synchro out, but this weekend I hauled a big bobcat for a buddy. Everything seemed to go fine, but now I notice the transmissions is making an AWFUL racket, in all gears. This morning it sounded so bad that I decided I wasn't driving it until I got it rebuilt. That puts me on my motorcycle for commuting to work. Hope the weather holds :P

So, I need to decide for sure what I should order... Seems I can get a "rebuild kit with syncros" for around $300. I know for sure my 3/4 synchro is out, but don't know about the others. I'm not sure what the grinding noise now is, but I'm assuming input or output shaft bearing (or both). I'm not sure what comes with these kits... Someone steer me in the right direction??

Here's the site I was looking at:

http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_cata...kit_dodge.html

Thanks!

Im faced with the exact same problem except the syncro issue. I was driving home from an out of town trip riding along in 5th when all of a sudden it started making an aweful racket. i shifted down to 4th and it was still there but much less pronounced. When i got home i found that it makes noise in every gear including in neutral, if I press the clucth in it stops making noise which leads me to think its on the input side somewhere. Ill be pulling it this weekend to take a look. I did check the fluid and its full. BTW if anyone has a manual for the 360 rebuild if you can shoot me a copy at amdoverclocker2002@yahoo.com that would rock.

Acorn,

Im not sure about quality but http://www.quad4x4.com/Dodge_Getrag_G360_Parts.html has decent prices and the list the syncro's too.

Tenny,

I ended up biting the bullet and just getting a rebuilt one off of ebay. It cost me 1098 plus about 150 shipping. The core charge is 400 bucks, which I'm still stuck with, as I haven't gotten the old one ready to ship yet. As this was my daily driver, I just thought this would be faster, and, considering i'd never torn into one, possibly even cheaper. It would have been faster too, if I hadn't relied on a friend to help me pull and replace it lol. Anyways, thanks for the info, and I hope I never have to use it!

I do have the manual, btw, if you send me a message sometime during the day tomorrow, I will find a way to send it to you.

Ive been thinking about that as ive seen the trannys on ebay. But my reason with leaning towards the rebuild is i can be sure the shimming is correct and things are done right and properly inspected for damage. Ive seen many tranny shops just fix the broken part and call it rebuilt, i belive in throughly going through it and inspecting everything and replacing what is damaged and resealing and new bearings and syncro's.

I have found the manual thanks though.

And even if I bought a rebuilt one I would likely tear into it to check stuff esp since the shim is sucks a specific failure point.

Yeah I would have rather done it myself as well, but instead I'm relying on the 1 year warranty that came with it - plus they offered up to 3 years if you paid extra.. Hoping they wouldn't do that unless they were good rebuilders.. About 1000 miles on it so far, and so far so good

Glad you got the manual.
