2x4 front brakes
my father has a 93 2x4 5 speed stand cab 3/4 truck and i know on mine i have a special socket i was wondering if he had some thing like that to take off the front rotors or what does it take
It's been a while since I was into the front of mine but I think I just used a channel-lock pliers on the front spindle nut (or a large socket, not special, just large) like any other 2wd vehicle. You will have to pull the calipers to get the rotors off but I don't recall anything special there either. Hope that my menory is correct. I'm sure someone else will chime in if I'm wrong.
12valve - You're memory is correct. The front is just like any older rear wheel drive vehicle...just bigger.
I use a big crescent wrench instead of channel locks - gives a better "feel" when tightening the bearings.
You don't need to remove the brake line just to pull the calipier off the mount, only if you're replacing the caliper and/or hose. Just don't let the caliper hang by the hose....

You must have different calipers than mine. My calipers have two bolts with flat spring-type retainers that bolt on from the outer edge. Maybe you pulled the caliper mounting bracket off the spindle?
