I plan on using a diesel core support and just welding in the old style round head lights bucket where they need to be to match the '70s grille I want to use.
Its not a bad job. I did the same thing on my FireWagon. Measure 3 times and cut once. I think the pics are still in my story over on the Conversions board of the DTR if you need a reference.
I have decided to build up a motor with a little more "minerals" for this build.
I have partially stripped down a 215 HP P-pumped 12V. The head is off getting cleaned up and checked out. Then new valve seals and 60#s over Cummins springs will be installed. All on top of a fresh Cummins HG using some ARP bolts to hold it all in place.
I installed some 4K gov springs and modified the AFC for a lot more travel last night. A longer but softer sprung AFC spring was installed to help me tune the fuel delivery.
I haven't got as far as sorting out the rear axle completely, but some kind of traction aid would be really nice.
After 5 straight days of work, the refreshed and test run motor along with the 47RH transmission are now installed in the frame rails.
I will update with more details after I get a good nights sleep.
Good to hear. Didn't want to bother you during wrench week, being how hectic things are usually. Looking forwards to seeing the pix. Will post them, if you want.
The pictures show the first two days of wrench week.
We started off with the cleaned up and milled down .012 head I had just gotten back from the shop the day before. Then new Cummins valve seals along with 60 over valve springs where installed.
The block was shop ragged up then taped off for the piston bores. Then plastic plugs where used for pushrod holes, water galleys ETC. The block was then throughly cleaned up.
With the block deck cleaned up and the head assembled, we headed [no pun intended] toward timing the pump and block followed by pinning them. The P7100 pump was pulled from the timing case, making room for a fresh bling tappet cover from Keating to be installed. I also used their frost plugs and the rear plate.
The picture of the magnetic wheel on the damper was used to measure the amount of timing we added, by rotating the motor without the injection pump connected to the gear. Then installing the timed pump onto the motor so we gained 7 degrees of timing. This got us from the 13.5 stock # to 20.5 of timing now. The P-7100 pump does not have a key that fits into a slot in the gear like the VE pump does.
Before installing the injection pump back on I modified the AFC housing for more travel. Added a stiffer and longer AFC spring that now allows me to not fully bottom out till over 30 PSI. I also swapped the fuel plate out for a #10, then added 4K Gov springs and used some 191 delivery valves I had in the shop.
A Cummins HG I had sitting on the shelf since 2011 was used and then the fresh head was attached.
Then that night after dinner we torqued down some ARP studs in order from the center of the head outwards in rounds of 25 LBFT increments. Setting the valve lash, installing a 3 piece exhasust manifold and a turbo rounded out the last few hours of that night.
But that is getting ahead of the pictures...
I like the mastiff captions, I assume Tman speaks dog?
That timing tool is cool, never seen one of those.
Do I spy Athletic brews on the table?
Man I could spend all day in that shop looking at vehicles, tools & parts. I can see why you want to spend most of your time there with the dogs - and kid when she can now.
Ben,
There are other sites on the web that specialize in nice looking womenfolk pictures.
PM me if you need help finding some.
BWA-HA!...I don't think I'll ever need help finding those...I get emails every day from lonely, desperate, beautiful women willing to send me all their pictures if I'll just verify my identity with a credit card and banking information......Ben

It would appear that T-man speaks dog...
I have a dial indicator tool to double check the timing but the magnetic timing wheel was handy and quick. We also found it could be helpful for setting the valve lash.
Yeah those are some of Athletic Brews IPA offerings on the work table. A little tasty craft NA beer while building the engine sounded like a smart move.
Working in the shop with the dogs is one of my preferred activities. My daughter was up on both Sat. and Sun of Wrench week to hang out and help. M-F, she works a real job.
She showed up Sunday morning with some tasty baked treats for breakfast. She was also the one that snapped the photo of the head being lowered on the block.
