1st post - Cowl crack questions

Swapping a '93 engine into a '92 and since I have the front clip off I see that the '92 has a sopping wet floor and the standard cracks in the cowl, both sides.

I'm guessing the answer is 'NO', but does Dodge make the patch kits parts anymore? If not does anyone else make them or does anyone have some good detailed instructions of what they did to fix this?

I'm not much of a welder, took 1 class in high school, but I think I'm willing to try to fix this myself if I can get some good pointers. How thick of metal should I use? I was thinking of just cutting some pieces from the '93 cowls to fashion some patch pieces but don't know.

Any and all suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Darin

Hey Darin, there is a article in the sticky at the top of the 1st gen forums that has a step by step on how to repair it. I just found out my cowl is looking sad these days too.

I saw that article but I don't think they make/sell that patch anymore. I'm pretty sure I'll have to fab something myself but hoping I can get some more in depth details on what others have done.

I found this post https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...46&postcount=6 after some searching and this is probably what I'll try to do.

Does anyone have a recommendation for metal thickness or should I just use standard auto sheet metal?

Just use the same thickness that's there.

That's a very neat repair. I'm going to have to do this next summer as well. I'll probably use some sheet metal a little thicker then the factory gauge.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure what kind of job I'll be able to do but I might post some pictures if it goes well and I'm not too embarrassed by my welding.

18ga. or 16ga. should be fine for repair material. 18 would be easier for you to form.
