1st Gen Turbo Upgrade/Exhaust brake
they're around. and the band aid will "run pretty good" but you're polishing a turd. its a 40 year old turbo design. just throwing a bigger compressor wheel on it is not the cure, it's a band aid.
so wait, lets do some math here. you spent $475 on a 14cm gated housing, $85 on a rebuild kit, $285 on the 60mm compressor, and lets just say $250 for a used hx35. that's nearly $1,100 on a turbo that is outdone by a stock he351cw. for $1100 you could've went out and bought a nice, new, BW S300 and been light years ahead of your old, antiquated HX-35. i'm not telling you how to spend your money, but you certainly shouldn't be giving turbo advice.

I'm telling him what I did, not necessarily "giving advice". There ARE some options other than the one that YOU think is the right one.
Incidentally, YOU don't know what I spent on the turbo work I mentioned. It breaks down as follows:
WH1C with GDS upgrades from Ebay: $270 shipped.
14 CM "Banks" (rebranded Cummins part) WG Housing from Ebay: $68 and local pick up.
US made rebuild kit from Ebay: $55 shipped.
Turbine shaft balancing at local shop: $30
2200* primer and paint: $16
Total: $439 for an upgraded, rebuilt, painted, non Chinese turbo.
Not that I feel I have to explain or justify my actions or posts to you but to add some perspective to YOUR statements.
Nothing wrong with the HE351CW but not the best option for everyone.
If you don't like the advise, don't take it. You want to do something different, great do it.
We are all here for the same reason, we love these old trucks and want to learn more about fixing them, modifying them and just keeping them on the road in general.
Your way is NOT the only way to make a Cummins motor run well.
Tim's way is not the only way either.
We can all do some research here, and make our own decisions after weighting the options.
I have a stock HX-35 turbo on my black '85 crew cab. I have no need for more power and I am totally happy with it.
The OP was looking for a mild upgrade for the motor, so his girlfriend could tow things around with. An HX-35 turbo MIGHT be a cheap and easy option to look at.
Relax and try to enjoy the weekend.
I am off to the shop to work on MY truck the way I want.
We can't stay in a vacuum. Wanting a better turbo doesn't mean wanting a newer truck. With no other changes, an he351 will make more power than an hx35. While spooling faster and running cooler. I went from 24psi max to 35psi max by only changing from hx to he351. Same fueling mods. It's about making power more efficiently.
