Arrow 1992 W250...tranny....

Hey, I gotta 92' w250 with an auto...having some tranny issues....I flushed it today, put a new filter in...the sea foam made it run better almost instantly....the tranny seems to be running real good now, night and day from when I bought it . The only issue is I am still having a slow leak coming from the torque converter....if any one has any simple fixes, it'd be a huge help. I really appreciate it.

Hey, I cant help you with your tranny issue as I dont have my truck yet!
But I'm hoping you can help me. I found a 1992 2500 LE 4X4 Cummins, really clean, notr rust or dents, 199K miles, automatic for $6500. Is this a good price? Are there any things I should look for or inspect for that could affect my decision to buy the vehicle? This is a 2 owner truck. Thanks

Hound dog...I bought my truck from a Mormon farmer who I assume did all the repairs on his truck...he has like five 1rst gens at his house....long story short...the truck has been driven hard and put away wet....I paid $4000 for this 92' LE. The biggest deal is that the engine has 100,000 miles....it runs freakin' awesome...so I am just fixin' everything else that was half fixed or jerry rig....that all being said and despite all the little issues...I LOVE THIS TRUCK! I love it. The blue book on the truck your lookin at is probably around $4500-$5500. After all the repairs and new tires on my rig, I'm at $6500. I'd maybe run it to a cummins shop or a mechanic you know and trust and have them inspect it....I wish I did. But again, I still love this beast and I am sure you would too....hell, just buy the dang thing!

So some guys are telling me to go with the 2nd generations for the 24v motor.
But I like the mechanical no computer crap as I want this for a SHTF truck.
What do you think?

Yeah, I'm more "old fashioned" you could say. I love the mechanical side of it...easy to work on, (i'm no mechanic but I have been helped by an awesome friend). The body style is just....awesome. So much character....I am a redneck and to me I have enough computer crap and techno advancements...like what we are doing right now...its good, but sometimes I just like the past, I like a noisy old pickup that isn't perfect and just has a ...ummm rustic qaulity....I don't know. Have you driven one? Test it and see what you think. I love the cummins though. I have a FJ 62 Landcruiser as well, and I hope to have a cummins in it someday...thats where I got turned onto to these vehicles....good luck.

I agree, simple means more reliable and longer lasting. It's difficult to find one of these old trucks in good condition. The only draw back on this one is it is an automatic tranny. Any idea on how much how hard is it to change over to a manual? Which tranny is the best??

Yeah, the tranny's in these weren't really the best pairing with all the torque of the awesome cummins.,,,or so I have heard...the getrag manuals ttrannies they put in these aren't the greatest either. In 93 I think Dodge started putting in NV4500's...they are manuals...they are bullet proof...there are companies that sell rebuilds, or you can always find some guy on craigslist who might not know what he has....price wise, it can go either way depnding on what you find in a donor truck. Rebuilds run up to $2800. Its hard to say....to many options.

Musta been 94 or later, because my 93 owners manual lists the getrag as the manual.

Yeah, I was wonderin' that. My buddy swears they put em' in 93's but every 93 I have seen with an nv4500 mentions that its not the wimpy Getrag....leading me to believe it had the Getrag at one time...I don't know...I'm sure Dodge would know for certain, and the manuals usually don't lie.

there is not really an easy fix for a leak like you speak of.....gotta pull the transmission and change the seal....its cheap and easy but kinda time consuming.......the getrag is not wimpy and the NV4500 is not bulletproof, they both have there downfalls, and high pionts, i will say if you fix 5th gear in the nv4500 iv seen them takes tons and tons of abuse, and i have also put my getrag through lots of abuse, theres $0.02

I'll probably just fix the leak, can't afford to do a rebuild or upgrade right now anyways. Thanks for the info.

Yep, I feel you on the money thing, man. As far as different tranny's go, you gotta pick one with the qualities you like, and build it to suit your own needs. I think they all have their own pros and cons.

My buddy and I took the pan gasket off last night. Its gotta a "heal a coil" on one side which is causing a bad leak...we can't get the bolt to tighten all the way down, it keeps spinning. I think we might try to tap a new hole and re-thread it with a lil' bigger bolt....I don't know. The engine is tops! Its just everything else on the truck that is achin'. Tranny, driveshafts, I am runnin' out of dough! Yeah, its a lil' steep on the price, but maybe someone will buy it for the motor. We'll see. Yeah, new seal is comin'....gotta find time. Thanks for all the advice guys...much appreciated.
