if you take your cap off and turn it over the little brass thing (bout the size of a dime) should be tight on a recov sys (if its loose replace)
on a overflow it should be loose
on a overflow it should be loose

I've been having issue's with my thermostat not opening properly. The temp gauge has been getting up to the upper end of the normal range before the t-stat opens. It was also getting an air lock around the t-stat, I drilled a very small hole in the t-stat to eliminate the possibility of an air lock and it seems to be working, no more issue's with getting hot before the t-stat opens.
The coolant also doesn't seem to be getting sucked back into the radiator from the over flow bottle. I've replaced all the hoses, cummins t-stat, flushed the system, and put on a new radiator cap.
I think I have it mostly sorted out, but I've barley driven my truck this week so I'm not sure yet. I was hopping I had the wrong radiator cap and that was why my coolant wasn't getting sucked back into the radiator, but if my air locking issue's are sorted out, as well as my high temp before the t-stat opens, I think it might not be as big of a deal.

The water pump is about 8 months old and the head gasket is about a month old. I'm pretty sure the water pump is still fine, and sure hope the head gasket is.
The system isn't pushing coolant out like I would think it would if it was a head gasket issue. I have done a pressure test on the radiator and it is holding pressure fine. I don't know of any parts stores around my area that actually know of and sell the test kit I would need, I tried to find one about 6 months ago and had no luck.

I have solved my radiator-cap issues on three trucks(all Cummins) by replacing the plain caps with lever-lock caps.
Unless in a pinch, I will always insist on lever-lock caps in the future.

The new cap I bought is a lever lock cap. I think I have my problems worked out. I think my biggest issue was not getting all the air out of the block and not realizing that air was still trapped in the system.
