willl a 5 speed from a v10 work in the cummins

I am curious if the nv4500 out of a v10 dodge would work in the Cummins application.(well yes it will but..) I know that the bell housing will be different, but would everything else swap over the same or am i wronge with his crazy idea. I think it would be easier to find a V10 up here than a cummins, so im gonna toss this one up for open discussion.

AFAIK , the bell housing is the same on the V10 as well as the input shaft is the same size, but i have been away for 5 months, i even had to read my sig to remember what i had done to my truck...

There are 2 versions of the NV4500 transmission IIRC. The V10 may have the HD version, but I cannot confirm that. I know the 4500 behind the 5.9Magnum were the lighter version and may have problems with the CTD..

I'm 99.9% sure the v10 version IS the heavy duty one, same as the cummins.

According to my 96 service manual, the standard NV 4500 is in the 5.2L and 5.9L (gas) engines. The heavy duty NV 4500 is in the V10 and Cummins. From the pictures, there is a difference between the 2wd and 4wd housings, so you might be careful of that. It looks like it is just the tailstock, but still.......? I don't know about the bell housings.

You must change the output shaft and tailshaft. Changing the output shaft requires some considerable amount of disassembly, exactly how much I'm not sure.

they're the same part number... I looked it up when purchasing one removed from a V10 truck to replace mine...

tailshaft housing is only different for 4wd vs 2wd

5.9L did get the LD version... and then there's the Chevy versions (at least 2)

the ofroaders are usually looking for one of the chevy versions, with a lower 1st gear (like 6.34)- the HD is just overkill unless you're running a Diesel or big block

thanks for the info guys, so if i could find a 4x4 v10 i could strip all the parts out to convert my auto over. Except i would have to change the tail shaft? Well all in all im hoping i can find myself a wrecked cummins or v10 and convert my auto over cuz im really sick of it.
thaks again,
john

Try Jacks in Billerica, I think they locate too or I like Anchor in Plaistow, NH, they locate.
