White and blue smoke

My 96 started smoking more than usual after a couple of changes, though I don't know if they have anything to do with it. First, the fuel heater died a few months ago and I by-passed it. Second, I changed to Rotella 5W-40 synthetic since I can still get it in the CI-4 category. It's been below freezing for some time now; it starts right up and still gets a little over 19 MPG but I've been getting more complaints than usual about the smoke........I tell them it's smoking because I'm running bio-diesel (a little fib on my part) and that usually shuts them up ........It makes a pretty good plume of eye watering light blue smoke. It isn't using any oil and the report from blackstone said the oil had less than 1% fuel. Maybe a new blend of fuel up here in the NW, I really don't know.

Anybody have any experience similiar or any problems with the 5W-40 oils? ULSD fuel? Cold fuel?

Thanks for any input.

Blue and white smoke usually indicates slipped timing and/or low fuel pressure. I'd start with those.
