Transmission Slipping
Transmission Slipping
In the morning when I want to go to work I have to let my truck idle for about 10-15 min before I drive it. If I don't wait before I drive it then the gears will slip and the rpms will go up and I will go nowhere. sometimes if I let off the gas and then go again it will work but that doesnt work all the time. Other times I have to pull off the road and let it in nuetral for a while then it usually works. What can be causing this to slip? thanks
Has it been seviced recently?
Is the filter in good shape/clean?
A stock Dodge auto does not fill the converter in park, but it does in neutral, so start the Cummins and put the shifter in neutral to see if that changes things.
This condition--commonly called morning sickness- shows the trans is getting tired but may last quite a few miles yet if you use the neutral after starting thing.

The trans has not been serviced since i bought the truck about 30k miles ago, it now has about 140k on it. i dont know about the service before that. when i went to talk to a shop about it they told me not to change the fluid or anything becuase it will only make it worse. so i am not sure about how clean the filter is or the oil.
I had a similiar problem though not as sevier. I took it to a trans. shop to get the bands adjusted and a power flush. After they looked at it they said the same thing about servicing it. Basically not to do it cause it would make things worse. I ended up getting the transmission overhauled for about $2300. I took it to a couple of different shops and they both said the same thing.
In my opinion the myth about not servicing your tranny because its old is complete and total B.S. When I got my truck it would also not go anywhere for the first 30 seconds or so you tried to drive it. And even if you went 1000 miles and came to a stoplight it might still kick out of gear for 10 seconds or so, and then engage again. I thought for sure it probably wouldnt make it long. Changed the fluid and filter, and added a transgo shift kit, and it is WAY better, and MANY, MANY drag races later and some upgraded parts, and it is doing great now. I would suggest doing a fluid/filter change(not a flush) and see what that gets you. I bet it will fix your problem, or at least help it a lot. How can it hurt to put new fresh fluid, and a clean filter in your tranny?

change your fluid and make sure your fluid levels are good...there's a couple of cool ways to change fluid...u can take the pan off...buy a plug kit and install a plug on ur tranny pan...then what i like to do is drain all the fluid once...start the truck put her in neutral for amin...and drain a 2nd time......another way to do it is to unplug one of the lines from the tranny cooler..start the truck...put her in neutral and the fluid will pump itself out...pump out like 3/4 of the fluid before it gets foamy...choose acontainer with markings and you knowq right away how much fluid u need to put back in...if ur 1st gear is slipping or not engaging then u should consider adjusting the bands....IF u are considering a rebuild then invest the extra 1000$ and get a well build performance trans...you will never have to look back
Changing your fluid will do nothing for a blown TQ. The only thing you can do to make your life easier is put your truck in neutral while you let it warm up for a few minutes. The TQ is draining all the fluid out if it while it sits. The pump is not really running while you have it sitting in park. That is why on your dipstick it says check in neutral on the stick. Changing the fluids will do nothing but cost you money. You can try a bottle or lucas it may help out. But start saving for a tranny. A 140k out a 47re is pretty good. I only got 100k out of my old 12v tranny
OH YEAH AND ONE OTHER THING GO PATS!!!!!

Who says the torque converter is "blown"? If the filter is dirty then the fluid cant flow through it. If fluid cant flow through the filter, then there cant be much pressure in the transmission. If there isnt enough pressure, then the torque converter and clutches will slip because they are not being clamped tight enough. If the filter is clogged bad enough it wont get enough fluid to even move(seems to be his problem). Whats is $60 or $70 to change the fluid if it fixes your tranny problems? Its worth a try for darn sure.

the reason for not messing with higher mileage trannies is that trans fluid has detergents in them. When they get that much mileage in them, without regular fluid changes, the torque converter, and other parts, start to accumulate dirt, and the old fluid has lost it's detergency. When you replace the fluid/filter, it's full of new good detergents, and will wash out all that dirt that has accumulated in the t/c, etc, and will more than likely clog the new filter, depending on how much dirt is in the trans, which starves the pump of fluid, and burns everything up. If you do a fluid change, i would definitely say do another change within 5000 miles or so.

My tranny has real close to 100k on it, and I have beat the tar out of it. I thought it was going out when i bought the truck. Maybe you guys have more money than me and dont mind spending it, but I would take my chances on a fluid and filter change. If it doesent work, its all of $60 down the drain. Im still willing to bet it might fix his problem.

Convertor is draining down because it is blown!!!!. The best thing he can do for that tranny is dump 2 bottles of Lucas in it and start saving. The Convertor was the biggest issue of these tranny's. So go ahead check the valves and change the fluid abnd if you saved any money on those 2 things throw it out the window becuase thats what you just did with you by trying those 2 other things
the latest service bulletin, per my trans shop, is that they are to completely remove the check valve. The guy can do what he thinks is best, but in my opinion, his best direction is to just start saving money. his chances of the trans lasting longer without changing the fluid are better than it lasting after he changes the fluid. The only reason i have aftermarket parts in my trans is that the lugs on the torque converter were failing, and i had the trans out anyways. Spending that extra 1600 bucks is alot better than keeping it stock and having to shell out the money for a full rebuild in another 30-50k miles.
