Ticking noise
Ticking noise
When running, my truck has a constant ticking noise. Its especially noticeable at idle. At first I thought my exhaust might be a little loose, but i checked it and it seems tight, so what do i do next? Where is it coming from?? Could it be the valves or lift pump?
My brother's did the same thing, you could really hear it back by where the bed and cab met. Crawl underneth with something you can put up to the fuel lines and your ear (screwdriver comes to mind), if you hear it tapping in the fuel lines, the most likely thing it could be is the lift pump then after that the overflow valve.
Lift pmps are high on the probability list. Take an old heater hose about 2 feet long and hold one end to the pump and the other end to your ear (the clean end). If it is making the noise you will hear it loud and clear. If not keep going around the eng until you locate it.

Read some of my past posts on "ticking". Most of the guys that have been driving these 94 and up 12V's since 94 tend to have the same idea about it. They all tick now and then, sometimes it is worse than other times.
The only time mine had a tick was a few days before the lift pump failed. I have around 40,000 miles on the new eng without any ticking. Gotta be somethig in the check valves inside the pump. I put a carter pump on mine. maybe they have a different style check valve or seat.
Overflow valve !
Every time mine ticks it's been the overflow valve.
I got my last one from Piers.
It's ben holding up well since I've been changing my fuel filter more often.
