What is this ticking noise?

On cold days < 50 I hear a ticking sound comming from my engine compartment cruse or hwy speeds. Even when the engine warms up, the ticking sound is still there. The noise seems to vary a little with the speed of the engine. When the temperature heats up > 50 the ticking goes away. This is not a quiet tick, I can hear it with all the windows closed.

Another something I noticed. I recently added an Edge EZ and noticed the noise is a bit louder now. Could this be my lift pump or injectors causing the noise. And is this something I should bring it to the shop or is it just normal noise?

Thanks for the help.

I'm going to assume this is your first diesel. They make some racket or ticking sounds when they are REALLY cold. Perfectly normal. Your addition of the edge ez just allows a bit more intake noise and you can hear the diesel clatter on cold days a bit clearer.

If you don't agree that this is the problem, I'd get it in to the dealer.

Actually this is my second diesel. I owned a 85 Toyota 2lt diesel. It was louder but it always made the same noise when cold or warm. This is my first big diesel however.

Thanks for the reply. I will keep an eye/ear on the noise. Would something like a pusher pump (F.A.S.S?) quiet the noise down or make it louder?

Found this in the TDR web site:
http://www.turbodieselregister.com/f...threadid=81370

my '03 H.O. had the tick at idle since new. it sounded fine at higher rpm's but always came back at idle. I found a cure and it's not pretty. Turns out that the H.O. has a notch in the bottom of the piston on one side to allow clearance for the oil cooling nozzle jet. if a piston is installed with the notch on the wrong side, the piston will lightly tap the oil nozzle on the down stroke and make the tapping noise. This was the case with mine on #5 cylinder. chryslers fix was to replace the short block @ 10,000 mi.. there was no damage to the original block that I could see. after 18 days in the shop the truck is back together and I have put 1,100 miles on the new engine and it runs the way it was designed to.

My 04 has the same tick after starting but seems to go away after warming up. It has been to cold for me to really check tho.

Do you know if the 03 SO engines could also have this problem. I think the SO has different nozzle jets than a HO.
