Stupid exhaust question

I know I saw something before here about which trucks have resonators and which have cats but I can't seem to find it.
So, what is that thing in front of my muffler? Truck is '98 12v and is not from CA.

thanks, pacmule

Being a 98, it should be a resonator. My 99 had a resonator and no cat. It looks like a very large soup can with a pipe going in the top and out of the bottom of the can.

what's under mine starts out clamped to what looks like about a 3" exhaust pipe then flares out as it goes back about a foot to the main body which is probably about 9" around and 10" long. it is then clamoed to a short section of 4" pipe that goes into the muffler.

The cat on my '97 has a 3" inlet that has a cone to full diameter, a can shaped body, and another cone that goes to a 4" outlet. The body is formed in two halves, and has flanges where he two halves are joined. Might be the best way to find out is to take the cat/resonator off and look inside it. If there is a grid it's a cat. If not, it's a resonator.
