Question Rain all day, Low idle

It down poured all day today while i was at work, my truck sat at my work from 6:00am - 5:00pm with stacks uncovered. On my way home as i let of the throttle it would bring the rpms down to about 200 instead of the usual 850-900.. going down the road after work it spit a ton of soot / water out of the stacks but it hasnt been a problem before. Does anyone know why my idle would go way down? (when i got home i let it idle in park and it was still around 200-250rpms.

Thanks

250 rpms seems really low. I didnt even think the engine would run that low.

im pretty sure that leaving the stacks uncovered isnt your problem you'd have to have an awful lot of water to be able to cause a problem.

I agree, even if your stacks were completely flooded, it wouldn't cause that much backpressure, it would just blow out bubbles and water till it was clear.

right. I wonder if mabey you got some water in the fuel? Have you tried putting an additive in the tank like power service. Try that and see if it helps. I worked on a f700 that had a cummins in it, the thing would hardly run would only free rev to about 2k rpms. On the road it would only go about 15 mph. The owner spent about 1300$ throwing parts at it trying to fix it. New turbo, lift pump, new lines, new sender, ect. I added a whole bottle of power service 911 to about 20 gals of fuel. It was like a new truck after a couple of miles of driving. Dont know if it will work for you but it is worth a try.

I've had diesel tractors with stack flaps that didn't close and went unnoticed sit all winter.
After the black geyser on the first startup they ran just fine.

today i changed out the fuel filter, that didnt help, talked to a cummins mechanic and he said he thinks my idle adjustment bolt worked its way out a bit, so tommorow im going to give that a shot. The problem with that is when i first bought the truck i thought it idled a little high so i figured id turn it down a bit so when i felt around for the bolt what i felt was grounded off. So either i was feeling the wrong spot or someone ground it or broke it, either way its hard to see it.

yeah to get to the idle adjustment bolt which i assume you are talking about you have to pretty much lay on top of the motor it is almost impossible to see without a mirror. You also have to get 2 10mm wrenches on it. one to hold the bolt the other to tighten the jam nut.

I remember adjusting my idle, not fun. But My engine wouldn't even run below 450ish rpms.

Thanks guys, i can locate the adjustment bolt, but looks like someone has been there before cause the head is broken. Tried, i got the nut loose, tried locking small vise grips on the bottom and spin it but its tight so i sprayed it up with p-blaster, busy day at work, ran outta day light, tommorows another day
