P pump adjustments?

Well I just replaced the p7100 on my 97 with a used unit that I got from a truck salvage dealer. He said it came off a running 110k truck and matched to my auto tranny. It looked like a good unit from what you can tell by just looking at it ( the factory safety wiring was still in place and it was pretty clean and externally damage free). I paid $450 for it. Oh , this is folowing my saga from this thread https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=225749. Well I got it installed with no major issues and I was hoping it would run like a dream... but. It did start after quite a bit of bleeding and it actually does run good but it seems that the idle is low as I have to put some pressure on the pedal to keep it smooth. And to get it to start I have to push the pedal a little while I crank it even on a restart. Also when I go to put the truck in gear either reverse or drive it will stall right away. I can get it to move if I again put some pressure on the pedal to bring the RPM's up. It also does not seem to accelerate very smoothly and it smokes (greyish) when you rap on the pedal. I have never had this truck running well so I don't really have a good reference point, this was an ex mine service truck but with only 71k before the previous pump broke and they deadlined it. It has onther issues that may or may not be related. The shut off solenoid is not working (been reading threads on that, currently have it off and just wired the lever up), and the power brakes and steering are none existant. I put the motor in TDC with the timing pin and then put the used pump in TDC by rotating it till the side lever showed, I transfered the cable mechanism plate and some of the other feed and return lines from my old pump then installed it. Are there any other adjustments or areas I am missing that could be causing the above symptoms. Thanks for any help with this and sorry for the long post but its hard to describe.

First off, you need to adjust your idle speed, end of the pump, towards the bellcrank, there is a bolt with a 10 MM head, adjust for 800 RPMs or so.

Timing the pump is probably past what you want to do, there are instructions on here to do it. It generally is not a good idea to trust a dealer to get you the right pump, were the numbers on the side exactly the same?

Where are you located, perhaps one of us is close enough to look at it?

I'm not following how you timed the pump.

Did you pull the side plug and flip the cam lock before installling the pump?

I know this is late, but a bench calibration is around a couple hundred dollars and worth the expense. That way you know where the pump is timed.

Start with bumping the idle and double check all the fuel lines from the prefilter to the overflow line. Any air leak will cause your problems.

So if I set the motor at TDC and the pump was installed with the side lever at TDC doesn't that take care of the timing issue or is that just in the ball park and it requires more fine tuning. I will set the idle speed with that bolt. Does the bolt push on the linkage physically like on a carb or does it affect an internal adjustment. Also my tach is not working where on the motor does it pick up the signal, is it from the sensor on the harmonic balancer? Thanks again for any help. One more question which numbers on the pump will tell me what kind of pump I have.

Fueling Around, yes I rotated the replacement pump with the nut and washer on the bench until the side lever appeared then locked it in place with the slotted plug until I got the pump installed. I put the motor into TDC by using the timing pin that is right under the IP behind the front cover. I initially brought the pump to my local diesel shop (Desert Diesel in Tucson) and the guy told me that by doing the above it should be fine. The motor does not run horrible but it does not idle well, it stalls when going into gear and it won't start unless you press on the gas a little. It also seems to accelerate roughly and smokes (greyish) when you get on it.

Idle adjustment> http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/adjustm...d_Gen-Idle.htm

The way you set things at TDC can only be right on stock or 180° out.
If it was out 180° doubt if it would run.

Thanks so much for the idle procedure, Man I love this forum! I will adjust the idle and report back. Any suggestions on where to start trouble shooting the power brakes and power steering issue (no assist on either). Does the vacuum pump actually power anything on trucks with hydroboost? I saw that there is a plastic vacuum line coming off the pump but at the end of the tee it is capped off, I can't tell if it is factory or the PO did it.

Ok got ya. that is the way to get a stock pump timing.

A 97 has hyrdroboost that gives power steering & brakes from the power steering pump system. Lack of both, hmm, check the power steering reservoir?

Vaccum pump will run heat selector & cruise control. The line should run to up to the firewall under the hood gasket and mixed in the wire harness bundles.

Get your idle bumped and run the truck a bit. Maybe just junked up from the previous troubles.
