Overflow valve w/o spring??

I just replaced my overflow valve. The old one had been on the truck since i bought it back in 1999. OH yea its a 1997. Anyway when i got the old one out i noticed it didnt seem like the new one. AAhhhh got to looking at it an the one i took out didnt have a spring in it just the ball was there moving freely. Is this normal? If not what happend to the spring?

thanks Brent

There had better be a spring in that little sucker, else you fuel presure would be very low and a lot of diesel will be returning back into the fuel tank. There definitely needs to be a spring in there. Good thing you decided to replace it.
Maybe the old one was assembled without a spring by accident.

Highly doubt it came without a spring, fuel pressure would have been near zero for at least the last eight years, engine would have run like crap.
My bet is the spring fell apart and is now in little pieces in your fuel tank.

But the truck doesnt seem to be any different. Why is that? An like i said when i took it out the ball was just free moving like shaking a marble in a jar. I dont know what happend to the old one. Why would there not be any difference?

Maybe the spring is wedged somewhere in the return line in effect acting as a pressure regulator.
It would be interesting to measure fuel pressure with both the old and new overflow valve.
