nv4500 to 47re swap

I have a 94 3500 4x4 with a 5spd. Earlier this week it became stuck in 5th. Probably a shift fork issue? I can't reach anything through the floor so the tranny has to come out. I love the 5spd on the highway but it's a pain driving around town. I have a 47re and tcase out of a 96 v10 rig with 77-78K miles and a 2wd 47re with a bad converter out of my 94 Cummins parts truck; the parts rig has all of the interior stuff I might need. I was thinking I could put the diesel valve body in the v10 trans? Can I use the v10 converter? I don't know that much about auto trannies; Am I on the right track or completely off course? Is there anything I'm missing?

Thanks in advance,
Nick

My buddy cut the trans tunnel out of the truck so he could pop the top off the NV4500 for whatever issue he was having. He modified the tunnel so it would bolt/screw back in.

Its made getting the trans in and out since much easier too.

EDIT: If you must go auto, you can probably piece together a workable 4wd 47RH ('94 style) from the two autos you have.

Thanks. Do you know if the V10 converter would work with the diesel valve body? How would the v10 converter "act" in comparison to a diesel converter?

Thanks in advance,
Nick

Unfortunately, you are asking for a huge hassle.

To do an Auto swap without driving yourself nuts, you need to stick with either a 94 or 95 47RH, not RE.

I am fairly certain the only changes really between the V10 and the diesel were the governor and the torque converter.

You could get the 4X4 OD section out of a 91.5-93 or a 94/95 diesel trans and change your 2WD 94 trans to 4X4, but you can't use the 96 one you have.

Torque converters aren't terribly expensive if you stay with a stock rebuilt one, typically under 300 bucks.

No idea. I'm a manual guy, so I say fix the NV4500 and carry on.

I'm a manual guy too, or at least I was; I guess I'm getting old. I assume the 47re won't work because of the "e" part? So I'd need a completely hydraulic trans? I do have a beater '93 Cummins with a bad converter, but it's a 2wd.

Thanks,
Nick

Yes, thru 95 the governor circuit was hydraulic, starting in 96 the computer took over and there is a pressure sensor and PWM solenoid in the VB for the computer to control your pressures.

Thanks Pat. I'm convinced; I'll keep the 4500 and do a redneck short throw shifter kit.
