new truck, white smoke
new truck, white smoke
Hello again, I bought a new truck on friday, 95 reg cab CTD 5 spd 66,000 original miles. the truck starts and runs great, but...in the morning when I leave the house it just shoots a steady streak of white/blue smoke at all RPM's but then clears in about 4-5 miles, and only in the morning. Got any ideas??
its just cold. i think. you might have it checked out. thats low miles for a 13 year old pickup, it sat for some time i can olny asume. could be gumed up injecters. try some injecter cleaner.
White smoke on a diesel engine usually indicates that the combustion temeratures aren't hot enough to completely burn all of the diesel fuel. Basically, the engine is too cold. This can be prevented by utilizing the block heater.
White smoke is also indicative of slipped timing.
Not being familiar with the undervalved, doesn't a 12 valve have something that changes the timing on first start up, then as the engine warms up it changes it back to normal timing?
Perhaps this "something" is not working, thus the white smoke till it's warmed up?

Along with timing, check the fuel pressure. It could be a plugged fuel filter or pre-heater screen, weak pump or a worn out overflow valve. You might want to run a bottle of good injector cleaner through it too.

Nice of you to consider us under-valved in your travels.Sounds like timing to me as well. The fuel system is a good start, conditioner, filters etc then a possible look at the Overflow valve. A failing overflow will make the timing late and cause the same symptoms without the "slipped" timing off the gear.
thanks for all the help, I check the fuel heater and its not working got a new heater, wiring harness and pre-filter kit coming, as far as the overflow valve I forgot to mention that I put a new one in [had it layin on the shelf] and still no good. when I get the fuel heater back together I'll be able to find the true furl pressure and then if that dosent help I'll tear into it and re-time the pump. Thanks again!!
