Need some help with 96

A friend of mine bought a 96 stock truck 200k was old company vehicle so we know nothing about it. He picked it up cheap and needed a truck. So here is the story i got .Friends brother bought truck and had ticking noise in engine. I guess they pulled head and maybe changed head gasket? found two bent pushrods (replaced) truck runs and drives good but smokes (white) at idle and not under load. Under load smokes (black) ..I was thinking injector pump going bad or out of time? He checked oil no water and no oil in Radiator.
Any suggestions..?

Id start with a new air filter and fuel filter. the black smoke is from fueling under load, its gonna smoke some but How much is a lot? if theres a boost leak it could be loosing air and causing weak running and smoke. How does it idle? the overflow valve can cause white smoke and poor running.

Overflow valve? not sure what that is. Are you talking about the tube like my 02 has that runs to front of engine and has a catch can? I cant remember if the early motors had them its been awhile since i messed with a 12valve. Allot of smoke means more than expected from a stock truck.

Has the fuel lines been replaced if not its time, low fuel pressure can cause white smoke. If you don't know alot about the history of the truck and with 200k miles on it you need to go over it real good. Depending on if and when it has ben done I would change fuel filter, air filter, replace overflow valve marty tompkins has the best deal on these and is where I get mine. Change fuel lines and check your fuel pressure, sliped timing will also cause white smoke might want to get that checked to, and if you think they idled alot with it might want to run a good healthy dose of injector cleaner through the next couple of tanks.

I have never seen a bad p7100 so I don't know if they would smoke or not. White smoke can be cause by a number of things though, what else makes you think its the pump?

Hey Plow , Yeah i had a bad one on my 92 after 250k ,I ended up with 350k on the ticker before i sold it. I was just wondering if they did the white smoke number like my 02 did before it went poof...Just trying to single the problem out without pulling parts..I dont have my hands on the truck until this weekend so its hard for me to diagnose the problem ,Just looking for ideas to save me time...Im hopeing its not the pump ..Most expensive problem to fix and not exactly easy to come by without me having to drive a good distance to get it..The rest like if the head is messed up i can get local..

White smoke could mean timing...

it could also mean thats completely unatomized fuel going out the tailpipe..

From the DIS website ( http://www.dieselpage.com/tip4.htm ):

************************************************** *
White Smoke -

White smoke usually occurs when there is not enough temperature to burn the fuel. The unburned fuel particles are then exhausted usually by a rich fuel smell. In cold weather it is not uncommon to get white smoke until engine temperature builds up. One cause of white smoke on engine start up could be faulty glow plugs or glow plug system. Low engine cranking speed can also create an excessive amount of white smoke.

If the problem persists after the engine is up to operating temperature several other things should be checked. A faulty injector can cause white smoke. Timing is often a factor when white smoke is excessive. Low engine compression can cause the problem and the injection pump can also have problems that result in white smoke. Air in the fuel system can also result in white smoke.

************************************************** *******

White smoke CAN also indicate a bad overflow valve:

My vote is to check timing. After 200K, and the tendency of the 12V engines to loose timing since the timing gear nut was not torqued tight enough from the factory, it is a real possibility, and will cause white smoke, low power.
