is my transmission telling me it is about to go?

ok so normally i do all the maintenance on all my vehicles.... well if i don't have the time i'll drop it off with a friend of mine that has had a reputable shop for years and i'll let no one other than him touch my vehicles.... anyways i take it too him wednesday to change the valvecover gaskets and oil and trans fluid.... i told him to put in a quart of lucas in the trans as it has has a slight hesitation (longer than normal) shifting gears and it would lock unlock lock unlock lock into OD.... well i get it back and it was doin great..... until i get going on the highway headin home..... i had to drive like 2-3 miles before it would shift into OD BUT it would stay locked in and drove with no hesitation.... if i slowed down and got going again it would do the same thing..... i figured it was cause it was cold out.... well i drove over 200 miles today towing a car trailor with some big *** wooden crates on it..... did the exact same thing but the delay was longer..... i didn't ask and make sure he put in ATF+3 but i'm like 99% sure he did.... if he didn't and put in Dextron/ Mercron III would my trans act like this? or is my trans going to make me call Goerend sooner than i wanted too? Please help....

Dexron III will not cause any problems, except on some models it can cause a slight TC shudder on lock up. Most tranny guys recommend Dexron III with some of the Lube guard mixed in. There are two bottles, one red, one black. I can't remember which is which, but one is for friction modifier in ATF+3 vehicles. The other is to be put in with DIII.
Probably your TPS though, or your TV cable needing adjustment.

Sounds to me like your TPS is out of adjustment or in need of cleaning. Do a search for TPS and you'll have hours of reading. Basically it's telling your computer that you have your foot farther into the throttle than you actually do, and it's not increasing speed at an appropriate rate so it holds off the overdrive shift.

Ok everyone I have two questions, one what is a TPS and second how do you drain the TC. Last time I drained the pan and changed the filter, but I didn’t know about training the TC. Thanks guys

good question.... i was wandering if this would help some too by allowing more fresh fluid in the trans.....

Unless the TC has a drain plug in it, there is no way to fully drain it without drilling a hole in it. If you set it upside down, and then move it arodun, you can get a ot of it out.

They make kits that have a drill bit and rivet in them, so you can drill the shell, let it drain, and then put the rivet in to seal the hole.

not something I would do, but I know they make a kit for it.

If you disconnect the return line to the tranny, the rearmost tranny line from the cooler, you can get a good fluid change.

Fill the tranny with about 4-5 quarts after changing the filter and putting the pan back on. Disconnect the return line, and put a bucket under the line. You will need to probably put a small hose to direct the fluid in the bucket. Start the truck but have somebody ready to pour more fluid in the fill tube. Watch the fluid coming out of the line and when it turns to bright red, The fluid has been changed out with new. Just make sure that the amount coming out equals the amount going in and the pump doesent sputter too much. It usually takes about 20 quarts to get it changed out good.

That’s really strange, it took me 8 quarts (including the 5 in the pan) and the fluid was coming out bright red. It still shifts really ruff in 1st to 2nd.
