metal flakes in fuel filter

Drained my fuel filter today and found some metal flakes in it. They were shiny flakes and there were quite a few of them. Does anyone have an idea of where they might have come from. I am hoping that nothing major is wrong. Thanks for any help.

More than likely it's contamination you picked up at the fuel station.

Worst thing it could be is the lift pump eating itself. I think the filter will stop any bits that are big enough to hurt the injection pump. You might want to replace the lift pump as insurance, they're around $120 I think. Out of curiosity, what brand of fuel additive do you use, if any?

No lift pump on your year as yours is mechanical, I side with contamination, and would check the new filter in a couple of hundred miles, Goodluck,, Rick

Easy way to see if it's coming from a disintegrating lift pump or from the fuel station is to service the prefilter as it is ahead of the lift pump. You should do it anyway.

If they are alumimum they are coming from the tank slide. I am sure it does not do the pump any good, I used to get it until I locked the slide down. There are three screws with a shoulder that allow the pickup and gage to slide up and down, the screws wear into the slide causing the chips which I assume are picked up when running the fuel low.

I was thinking that it may be that fuel tank slide. I locked it down when I first got the truck but it may have come loose again. I guess the worst thing that could be going bad is the lift pump so that is not so bad.
Thanks again,
Justin

Justin, what does the pre-heater screen look like? I agree with Infidel, if its coming from the tank, you should see something in that screen. Its a pretty fine screen too. Dont seem like any big chips should get through it.

Screen did not stop the chips on mine, putting washers under the screws did.
