Metal To Metal NV5600 Reverse Issues
Metal To Metal NV5600 Reverse Issues
Hey guys I got a quick question for yall and sorry if this has ever been covered but I have searched and searched and cant find anything on my problem...well here it is...i have a 2004 Dodge 3500 DRW 4x4 with the NV5600 tranny and when I put it in reverse and start to back up if i push the clutch all the way down and start letting off it, it sounds like my clutch is disengaging to fast and is unleashing all the torque possible...or my whole drive shaft is loose or something and its just banging on my rear diff...thats just the noise it makes but i cant figure out for the life of me where it is actually coming from. It just sounds like something metal is slamming into something else that is metal. The clutch is firm and is pratically new. The truck also does this “hop” when I back up real slow. Could this be a tranny issue? All the gears shift very well and doesn’t make any weird or unusual sounds. Ii know the truck has alot of torque just stock but what would be causing this sound as such a low speed with the clutch disengaging in reverse because it doesn’t do it In any forward gears? Could it be a flywheel issue or has anybody heard of the drive shaft having slack in it...any suggestions would be much appreciated.
The first owner of my truck must have hit R a lot instead of 5th and wrecked the synchro and it was metal to metal when going into R but that doesn't sound like your problem if your R is smooth. I'd try blocking up the back end and try it or drop the drive shaft and try it, to maybe isolate the noise. Maybe apply a little emergency brake if you try it on blocks just to change the load a little. What you describe sounds like the clutch is chattering bad but only in R. Maybe something wrong with the pressure plate springs or a chipped gear???? I would also pull a PTO cover and check the inside magnet for abnormal metal. Craig
hey thanks for the reply...its not sounding like the metal to metal grind that would be in a transmission...its not a grind sound at all...what it sounds like is that you have the drive shaft in your hand and then you bang it on the rear diff and the resulting sound would probably sound similar...by the way does anybody live in Seattle/Tacoma Area of Washington? For example this is when i noticed it...i was backing up and letting off the cluth pretty slow because its a tight space till i get out to the road...i was backing up and a kid ran out behind me so i pushed the clutch in real fast and it made the noise like the transmission wasnt on the mounts good and all the torque moved some of my components...could it be mounts maybe?
I think your best bet is like what C Schomer said and try to isolate the noise. Just start rolling around under your truck and see what you can see. that is what has always worked for me. Check all mounting points from the motor back to the rear diff. anywhere a suspension or drivetrain part is connected to the frame or each other. good luck

From the size of your truck, I think you must have a 2 piece drivshaft. If you do, the hanger bearing may have a lot of movement that could cause the hop in reverse.
The metal to metal sound when shifting into reverse, could be all the small amounts of slack in all the different parts of the driveline. If it only clanks once this could just be normal, or you could have a bad u-joint. A bad u-joint could also cause the hop.
