Metal flakes in fuel canister

Got a dash light last weekend. Checked for codes with my Bully Dog and it said no codes. Pushed clear and it went away. Towed my toyhauler home with no issues. Last night I went to install a new fuel filter and I see metal flakes in the canister. I wiped them out and they are certainly metal. Truck acts fine, but...probably a lift pump coming apart right?

no, not necessarily, ive seen the fuel nozzle scrape things up when you are fueling. My old 12V had a metal shroud on the fuel sender that was wearing on some screws in tank and and that is where shavings were coming from. Just my experience.
I wouldnt worry,

I could see that in some cases, but this was way more metal flake than that. I would see significant wear in the nozzle opening or the nozzles themselves if that were the case.

I wouldn't say not to worry yet, BUT I have found some hairy looking metal filings in my tank/filters from the pumps. Largest flakes that made it to my pre-filter screen were about 1/4" long, most of the brass ones stayed in the tank for some reason. Good luck.

If it was just a flake or two, I'd think differently, but this was a shiney bottom of my drain pal, and I wiped out the majority on a shop towel. I change the filter every 10k. So this has just shown up in the last 10k for sure. I'd have noticed this before. Truck has 70,000 towing miles on it.

there is nothing downstream of the filter other than the lift pump that would generate metal particles , i would replace it to be safe. on the other hand it could have came from the place where you filled up.

I thought of that too. I guess my thoughts are

A) It would really suck to get a 41' / 18,000lb toyhauler three states away and the truck quit.

B) At 70,000 miles, how much life can I really expect from it since they're known to crap out?

Might as well bite the bullet and know I'm good. Suggestions on which verion? AD / Fass? Seems to be varies opinions and I want the quietest version.

Either one would be fine. I think now they are both using a quieter pump. I don't know for sure but from what I have read here I think that is the case.
