Lost 2nd gear in the 96

Well today i towed a electric man lift up my mothers house to do some painting for her, the lift could not have wieghed more then 3000lbs max. All was fine and dandy unitll i got to the two large hills the lead up to her house. I pulled the first hill in second gear, not hamering on the truck at all, i was running about 30mph at about 2100 rpms, trans temps got to about 160 or so, no big deal. Ran the flats for a mile and the tranny temp came back down with the converter locked to about 140. I get to the second hill, its a sharp left turn, i start off in first gear and manualy put the shifter into 2nd, the truck hit second gear and it free reved to about 2500 rpms and the tranny temps shot up to 190 200. I stopped and tried it again and the same thing happend, so i just pulled the hill in first gear. So i still have 2nd gear but it is very touchy, if i get on the truck any type of throttle in second gear it will slip. I am guessing that the 2nd gear band burnt up or something. All other gears in the truck are fine and they do not slip. The converter does not slip and the trans temps have never gotten out of control. I checked the fluid and it does not smell burnt or anything and is at the full mark on the dipstick. The tranny is original and has 92K miles on it. Any insight would be great, thanks.

You answered your own question. Pull the pan and check out the junk band.

If the band is smoked, which i am sure it is, does the transmission need to be pulled apart to fix it, am i better off just having the entire thing rebuilt. I would imagine the clutches have been hurt by it slipping. Thanks

if the band is smoked, check that the band strut/support isn't bent.

Tranny has to come out and apart to replace the band.

reverse and 2nd are the only two gears that use bands. 1st, 3rd, and OD use clutch packs.

there used to be a band that could be replaced without pulling the trans. i used a few of them with good results in gassers. dont know if still available or not. i am using gasser bands in both my trucks with no problems.

I lost 2nd gear once, pulled the pan to take a look and there was a strange looking fork thing in the pan. turns out it is the piece that the adjuster uses to push on the band with. put it back up in there and torqued the band adjuster to specs and it worked good after that.

well the trans got opened up and things did not look to bad, converter was in poor condition, but everytihing else looked resonable. I had it rebuilt and when the guy was out test driving it with the new tranny in it, he had a pressure gauge hooked up to it and everytime the tranny shifted into second gear the line pressure dropped way off. He believes that there is a crack in the valve body somewhere. I will find out more tomorrow
