They came so detuned because of emissions.. If they would of put bigger injectors in them or a more aggressive fuel plate then they would of smoked....Thats also part of the reason all 2nd gens had the HX35 turbo w/12cm tiny housing. was to make NO turbo lag= no smoke.
Your lucky, Your truck being a 96 has the "215" motor in it, it has slightly bigger injectors and the AFC setup inside the pump is more desired. It was rated at 215hp with a 5spd and 180hp w/auto....96 and up that is. Those 96+ 5spd motors are beasts.
