Question 06 What are the cheapest safest smartest HP upgrades?

I'm picking up an 06 3500 4x4 4dr sport. It has 193000 on it. Looks completely stock in the pictures. I'm flying out to pick it up in CO and driving it home to Ct next week. I want to put in some hp upgrades but I want them to be inexpensive on both ends. (before and after installing) I want more hp like my 95 has but I want it to be hp upgrades that don't require continuous changes to keep from damage. I know the smarty is very popular but I can't quite afford it until I've paid for the truck, registration, taxes, and tires.
Basically I'm asking for simple reversible changes and nothing that's going to generate codes. Is there any simple changes? And if I take the silencer ring out will it generate any codes? I like the .

Thank you

Inexpensive and reliable don't usually go together. Best bet is to leave it alone if you don't want to spend much. If you were to buy a smarty jr and leave it on a lower setting you will be ok. Do gauges first, programmer later. Your trans is most likely on its last leg so take it easy until you have the cash for a goerend or equivalent. If you have a stick need a clutch, they don't hold much over stock power. My truck looks stock except for exhaust, it is very easy to plug in a programmer and make 400+ rwhp on newer trucks.

I bought my '03 new, and am still upgrading it. Just take your time. There are cheap and free mods to do that you will find with some reading here.

Horsepower for a diesel is cheap compared to gas engines. You can get 150hp from a Smarty for $685.00. Supporting mods required for higher levels.

Been running a Smarty Jr for over 100,000 miles on high setting. Never a problem. All these guys that have injector trouble, ask 'em if they are running a Smarty Jr on high and they'll say no.

It's good for your lift pump, alternator, heck even my air door never failed. Just do it.

What setting did you put your air door on?

Ok guys Thanks. I forgot to mention it's a six speed. I bought it the other day and drove it home from colorado to Connecticut. 2002 miles all together. I got the 2149? injector bank code in Kansas. But I brought my OTC scanner with me and cleared it and then checked the connectors. All good slept the night praying before bed. Got up started it: all ok. Re cleared and completed the trip over the next 24 only stopping for food fuel and draining coffee. I love it! I took the silencer ring out for a day and put it back in this morning cause the fuel mileage dropped by half a mph. I'm looking for just a little hp and more mpg if possible.

Thanks. I still can't believe this thing runs and drives as well as it does. It's got 196k on it and drives better than my friends 2010 2500 ctd. Even he's envious. My brother's considering selling his silverado 2500 hd and Cadddy cts to get one now. It's such a great truck to drive.

The common mods like good exhaust and good intake are done by the factory. it's a very well designed system. You can spend hundreds of dollars on cold air intakes, fancy filters, and wide open exhausts. But, your fuel mileage and power won't change. I have yet to see that these common items make any differance on a stock truck.

The computer is where all the gains are. Get the Smarty Jr, play with settings a little bit to see what you like. And then leave it alone. Only open the hood for routine maint.
