How hard is it to change the oil cooler?
Well my truck dumped the oil cooler when the head gasket blew...and all I want to know is, how to change it? I don't even know where the little bugger is. How long will it take me to change it?
It's on the passenger side of the engine, toward the front. Coolant runs though it, so there's hoses running to it. It's sort of behind the oil filter, if memory serves. Not hard to get out, really, but my engine was on the ground when I took my cooler out.
yes it what the oil filter mounts to um be careful with the gasket on it a new one is oh i think 50 bucks from the ***********. there are about 15 10mm headed bolts that hold it on. you sure that cooler let go ?? they hardly ever go bad . mine blew a head gasket and was pumping oil into the radiator but the head gasket fixed that problem.
Well Cummins NE pressure tested it...and said it was bad, they just replaced the head gasket and when they fired it up they said they couldn't run it 5 minutes without the radiator filling with oil.

When I replaced them on Detroits I would clean the block and radiator with the steam cleaner, or use detergent.

I just replaced the cooler on mine. I put on an aftermarket oil pressure gauge and stripped out the plug on the top of the cooler. I bought one off ebay from a 1991 model. It fit my 1998 just fine. I did, however, buy a new Cummins gasket for it (OUCH!! almost $60). But I did the work myself with no prior experience at all. It took me 2 hours max from start to finish. So far, I have had no problems at all with the used cooler. Hope this helps!
