How do you set the idle?

I'm a diesel newbie. I looked where the throttle cable links up out by the injectors, but I dont see an adjustment screw.

Where is the adjustment at? (the idle is currently at 450 rpm)

on my 97 it is down behind the injection pump you can't hardly see it you kinda have't to snake your arm down behind there and feel it and then look around until you see it.

I *just* picked up a Haynes manual today, but I believe if you look at the end of the throttle cable, follow the linkage rod back towards the fuel filter area. Just below that is a small bolt in a casting boss, with a lock nut underneath the boss.

At least, that is what I gather from a little light reading so far

The Haynes book for Dodge trucks has a whole section on cummins. Genosgarage has them. Another thing you might check out are the CD manuals on Ebay. More info than the Haynes, but not as handy. You can get a DC shop manual from techauthority.com.

On setting the idle: The top of the screw has a tendency to get a groove worn into it from the idle stop. Makes setting the idle a bit touchy.

Get the fleet service manual/dodge repair manual...geno's has them....100 times better than haynes or chiltons.

I have one for all of my trucks, and the one for the 97 ctd is about 2 1/2 inches thick.

It is well worth the extra money.

I agree! Factory manual is worth the money! Best out there.

Before you try to adjust, crawl under the truck and look UP to the rear of the inj pump and get familiar where the adjustment is, as it is best adjusted by "feel" from the top.
Underneath you'll see a high speed stop screw with a seal on it .. That's NOT the one you want to mess with. The one you want is the one the throttle arm is resting on. It will be the most rearward screw and jamb nut on the pump.
It takes two 10mm wrenches and it won't take much turning at all to bump the idle up!
The hardest part is getting the jamb nut retightened without moving the idle screw.
It may take you a few stabs to get the right RPM.
Last month I adjusted mine to keep from stalling with A/C on and I wound up getting it a little too high(~925rpm).. The engine was much too warm at the time to be very touchy-feely down there and I called it good enough until Fall.
