Where is it leaking from? If you didn't get the drain lever lined up, it won't pull tight against the gasket. Your drain could be leaking by itself. You can always pull the filter housing off and pressure it up with air and watch for leaks.

98 has the cartridge style, you have to be VERY careful to line up the can with the slot and tab aligned. Easy way to check is when you put the nut on, could you run the nut down with your fingers until the threads showed?

If it is out of alignment, the can does not come all the way up to seal, and if you use a wrench to try and seal it, you break the housing.......

Yeah, it was out of alignment. Got to line the slots up. All is good!
thanks.

One more thing. Now my cruise control won't work. All fuses look good and the cruise light is on. Did I mess something up changing the filter?

Probably the most common problem, but if I tell you then you wouldn't be worthy of the secret CTD decoder ring..............................

Aw the heck with it, you pulled the vacuum line out of the tee up by the dash. That runs Cruise, 4WD and Defroster vent......... Track it from the Vacuum pump on the side of the engine back to the firewall.
