blue smoke issues after inj pump install

Hey everyone!
I pulled my inj. pump off and had them replace the housing cause it was striped out. so why i had it off i replaced the power steering pump and vacuum pump and also the lift pump. I got everything back togeather last night went out today to get it started. once it started i let it idle for about a half of a hour. Normaly it smokes a little blue smoke for about 10 mins then goes away. But now it is smoking all the time. the only time it does not smoke is when i take it for a ride. but once i bring it back and park it and let it idle it starts smoking again. 2 questions! 1 could i have the timing set wrong and that is why it is smoking? the truck is running good no power issues. I had the shop set the timing to 16.5 degrees so all i had to do is pin the pump to have the timing set. 2 I checked the turbo and it does have a little bit of oil resdue inside of it. Could this be the reason it is smoking? the turbo has very little play up and down and left to right. i figued since the truck has been sitting for 5 weeks cause of work and having no time to put it back togeather the oil was sitting in the cylinders. But i had it running all day so i would think it would have cleared up! I just dont want to drive it for fear i will mess it up.

Thanks for all the help!

Timing is not right. Time it properly, shops screw up the timing pin.

When you say time it right you mean by a guage on the pump? why do you think the timing is wrong? I always thought blue smoke means it is burning oil?
I am no diesel mech and please dont think i am questioning if you are right or wrong. I am just trying to learn what went wrong.
Thanks for your help!

Cold diesel exhaust will have a blue colour to it.

I have seen shops screw up the timing pin when resetting them. I had one pump that a shop installed a custom cam in it, told them to pin it at 17 degrees. They pinned it at 17 degrees according to the lift of a stock 160 pump, not to the new cam which they installed. Good thing I have a timing light to catch such things.

do you think it could be out 180 degrees? or do you think the timing is only out by a couple of degrees? I need to order a timing kit do you Recommend any kit? It would have been nice to be able to time the pump with just the pins.
Thanks
Eric

It won't run 180 cam degrees out. I would say it won't run much more than 20 crank degrees out. You can search on here and build your own timing kit. I did mine with a $20 dial indicator and $10 gear puller. The barring tool in my Cummins tool kit was the big money purchase, a whooping $90 for the tool kit. Beats the $250 for the snap-on kit.

I just want to take a min and update you on the process. I took your advice and made my own timing kit useing a drain plug and a digital dial indactor from harbor freight it has mm and inches. i had to buy a dv socket and a $46 barring tool from cummins. and bought a $10 puller from auto zone. when i checked the timing it was at 9.06 mm at tdc. that equals to well over 30 degrees of timing. I turned the motor til the guage read 5.73 17 degrees and poped the gear off. I set the motor to tdc by the pin and bolted the gear back on then i turned the motor over completely and checked the guage agian and the guage read 5.73. i bolted the truck back togeather and wow what a differance. it has alot more low end torque. and no more blue smoke! I just want to take a min and say thanks for all your help! i learn more and more from this site cause of people like you!
Thanks
Eric

This is good to hear. I also have the blue smoke, especially when cold. And it sounds like a 7.3 ford when cold....haha Need to get timing checked.
