Autozone Water pump

My water pump is starting to weep out of the weep hole. I called Autozone and they have one with a lifetime warranty for $36. Has anyone used an Autozone pump with success? Are the NAPA pumps better quality?

while working at autozone i noticed the average pump lasted about 3-4 years. thats just pumps that went out, i have no clue about pumps that werent returned. they could possibly last 10 years. but for people who replaced them a second time, the average was 3-4 years

I put one on my PSD. Before I did I took a file to any sharp edges, faired some corners etc.
Two years, 40,000 miles and zero problems- plus the warranty/price can't be beat.

I usually go the NAPA or other best quality route but in this case had good luck going less expensive. Since the warranty protects you from extra cost (except time to install) its a low risk experiment.

i've used autozone parts for many years on my old 76 chevy gasser, taking advantage of the lifetime warranty. I drive easy and not a lot of miles, and overall I can get 5-10 years out of most parts. I replaced a water pump again last year, it had probably lasted 10 years and 60-70k miles.

Mine went out last Oct. I got two pumps one from NAPA one from Car Quest. The rotating element in the from NAPA was not even close to the same as factory. The Car Quest one was visually the same, it went in and the NAPA got returned.

Is this a new unit or rebuilt? I refuse to use any rebuilt water pumps on any vehicle, due to the problems I've had with them. On CTDs, I try to go with a Dodge or Cummins unit, although there are companies making new aftermarket castings which seem to have reasonable quality.

I just installed one last week,

Link to my article.
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...6&postcount=10

but I got it from Pep Boys. It was around the same price and is supposed to be NEW not remanufactured. It also has a lifetime warranty.
When I went to install it, the impeller would rub on the inside of the housing so when I compared it to my spare unit, it was not pressed far enough onto the shaft when it was made.

I returned it to the store, He ask what engine I had then goes and brings out the new one then went and got the manager, they were mumbling to each other and pointing at me.
I spoke out and said That is the 5.9 Cummins, not the V-8..
They went back and looked on the computer and finally found it.
They thought I was trying to pull a fast one on them..

Other than that the pump was about 2 years old and I only replaced it because it was there and I was replacing the thermostat, it wasn’t leaking or anything.
I always have a new spare unit at home.
I also always use Fleetguard water pump additive and it seems to help.

I've had bad luck with AZ parts. Ours seem to carry the cheapest (quality, not price) parts possible. I might go with a WP from them, because it's only two bolts and they don't tenp to blow up all at once. I will NOT get brake pads from them.

If you go to Napa I have some info for you. There are two water pumps offered and let me save you some trouble.

Correct water pump--NWP 55-7145

wrong # DPW 120-3072

AS far as I can tell, the wrong pump looks like a gasoline style pump. That is, there is a round cage looking impeller. The correct pump looks OEM. I found out that the wrong one will leak within three days...

Good luck.

Well... I hope the one with the different impeller works because that is what I installed from AZ, so far so good

Question

$36 is a good price. I paid $52.39 from NAPA 2 months ago.

Tom,

I installed a NAPA waterpump p/n DPW 120-3072. I looked exactly like the OEM one?

Tom,

I think maybe you got the p/n's mixed up? See the pics. p/n NWP 55-7145 looks like a gasser's impeller.

Right: DPW 120-3072
Wrong: NWP 55-7145

Correct me if I'm wrong?

On my dad's 93 CTD his original pump impeller looked like the NAPA DPW 120-3072. On my 95 the pump impeller looked like the NAPA NWP 55-7145 but I'm not sure it is the original as it has England stamped on it. I can tell you that either one of these pumps will do the job. The Autozone pump, which favors the 120-3072 is seeping very slightly around the gasket so I'm going to change it out with a NAPA just for peace of mind. This is the easiest pump I have ever changed
