I bought my truck a couple weekends ago. The day after I bought it, I changed the tranny oil & filter. I also adjusted the bands at that time. Truck had 111k on it, and the tranny had been rebuilt at approximately 75k. It didn't look the tranny had been serviced since the rebuild. Yuck!

I heard it was a good idea not to mess with the bands if you dont know exactly what your doing. Will it ruin anything if its done incorrectly?

It's not like a do-it-yourself artery bypass home kit or anything. As long as you have an accurate dial torque wrench in inch pounds, there's really nothing to screw up. A beam type would work fine, but I wouldn't use a clicker type. You need to be able to "see" exactly what the torque on the bolt is.

But to answer your question, I would imagine you could prematurely wear the bands if you don't set them correctly. Just don't do it wrong, and you'll be fine.

IF your tranny is not slipping or giving you any trouble at all, I would just service it and go on, some have caused problems by trying to adjust them, the 94 in my sing has just turned over 100k and the three or four times I know of they have never been out of adustment, Goodluck,,,Rick

I turned the line pressure up on mine just as a last resort to the TC slipping, it isn't really necessary IMO if your tranny and TC are working properly. Do a search for line pressure and you'll catch a thread on how to do it. It isn't hard at all. Just make sure to adjust the TV pressure proportionately.

Kandgo, you're tranny may have not been out of adjustment, but that doesn't mean somebody else's won't be. Not all tranny's are equal when they leave the factory.

I don't mean any offense here, but if the manual says to adjust the bands every 24k miles, than I would follow the manual's advice. If you wait until the tranny is slipping or giving you trouble, than I doubt a simple band adjustment will be the miracle cure. It could be, but it isn't worth finding out because you didn't adjust your bands.

You don't wait until after your engine oil is broken down before chainging it do you? Of course not, the damage is now already done.

I hear you royta, I am no tranny man, I do however think he has gotten some great advice on how and the right tools to do it, I just know from some experience that there is more often there is not a adjustment needed if there is no known slipping and mistakes are made by the weekend truck fixer trying to adjust his bands that causes premature wear. But again I am no tranny guy, I stay away from them other than just service the filter and fluid. Goodluck,,,, Rick

I tend to respect Bill K at DTT's advice, don't adjust the bands unless you have to, you are more likely to cause problems for yourself than if you'd left them alone.

The 24k adjustment interval would certainly apply if you hadn't been the one driving the truck for the last 24k and didn't know how it was performing, just like it does for most people who have someone else service their tranny.

The old adage applies- Don't fix it unless it's broken.

this trans works perfect for me and shifts fast and solid.so i think ill leave it alone and just change fluid and save up for the valve body and tc.

My tranny had 30k on it and it worked out to about a 1/2 turn in on booth bands. I DID NOT have a torque wrench that would fit in their, so I improvised with a standard wrench and it worked fine.. just my .002
