Made some adjustments...
Today I finally broke down and put in the M&H 3 pin in and also turned the starwheel 1.5 turns down. When I took it for a ride, it took a little while for the turbo to spool. When it did finally spool it rocketed up! I have a HX35w with a bigger compressor housing so it should spool very quickly. I drove the truck home and turned the smoke screw down about 2 turns and that seemed to help spool the turbo better. Are these results normal?
Thanks!
Thanks!
yeah, I'd think so. It's not going to spool instantly will such a mild tune like you have with a stick shift truck. That said, it shouldn't take very long for that turbo to spool, it's got a fairly small housing and a 58mm compressor isn't that big.
I can't say for sure though. My truck is an auto and I never ran an hx35. I went from the h1c w/ 21cm housing to h1c w/ 14cm housing straight to the he351.

When i just put the turbo on with a stock pump it spooled up right away. I gave the smoke screw another half a turn. It jumps to about 5 pounds and sits there for a second or two then goes right up to 25 pounds. Should i try to turn the starwheel back up?
OK, 92 talk me through the staarwhell, where its at & what is its job or purpose. I'v bought 2 of these 1st gens. ( and making a deal on a 3rd) soooo, i need to know some of the things you guys are snapin off ,i'm takin serious intrest., in these great trucks.

Here is a page that has some great info to learn about the pump in general on what things do and how to adjust them.

This one is a thread that has some good pics of the star wheel. When adjusting it take the spring off of it and put a flathead in the groove and spin it up I first tried doing this by putting the flathead against the teeth and it bent the wheel so be careful and use the groove. Move it up a little bit at a time and test drive it then turn it again till it is to your liking. You will get fast at taking the afc top on and off but it will be for your benefit. I have had my starwheel in several spots and even bottomed out and now it is about a turn from the top and it is quicker spooling towards the top and less smoke on take off. The fuel pins plunger gets pushed down by the boost tubes pressure which lets the small pin in the afc go farther up the fuel pins ramp. When it does this it gives more fuel. To much fuel at first and it can flood your turbo and keep it from spooling properly and cause more smoke while your truck is just sitting there. By having the smoke screw and starwheel properly adjusted the pin will not give as much fuel on initial take off helping the turbo to not flood and spool faster giving less smoke better take off and a more efficient fuel economy ultimately. Hope this helps.
